Structural evaluation of recycled aggregate concrete circular columns having FRP rebars and synthetic fibers

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: This study investigated the axial compressive behavior of polypropylene macro synthetic fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete columns with glass fiber reinforced polymer rebars. The columns with steel rebars had higher axial load-carrying capacity but lower ductility compared to those with GFRP rebars. Eccentric loading resulted in similar decreases in axial load-carrying capacity for both types of columns.

Mohamed Hechmi El Ouni et al.

Summary: The study proposes finite element models, empirical models, and artificial neural network models to predict the axial strength of steel-tube concrete-filled CFRP-confined NSC columns. The accuracy of the FEM, empirical, and ANN models for axial strength prediction was found to be 94%, 87%, and 92% respectively.

Data-driven analysis on axial strength of GFRP-NSC columns based on practical artificial neural network tool

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: Previous research lacks theoretical estimation of the axial load-carrying strength (ALCS) of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite columns. This study introduces two approaches, empirical modeling and artificial neural networks (ANNs), to calculate the ALCS of GFRP normal strength concrete (NSC) columns (GFRP-NSC). The new empirical and ANN models demonstrate higher accuracy in capturing the ALCS compared to previous models.

Practical machine learning-based prediction model for axial capacity of square CFST columns

Tien-Thinh Le

Summary: This paper develops a surrogate Machine-Learning model based on Gaussian Process Regression to predict the axial load of square CFST columns under compression. Through the extraction and utilization of experimental data, the performance of the GPR model surpasses that of existing models in predicting the axial load of square CFST columns. A Graphical User Interface is also developed for practical application, which assists researchers and engineers in teaching and interpreting the axial behavior of CFST columns.

Thomas I. Altanopoulos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) in analyzing the static behavior of tapered poles made of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) and validates the theoretical model through comparison with experimental results. The research concludes that FEM can be confidently used in the analysis and design of GFRP structures without the need for costly experimentation.

Efficiency of GFRP bars and hoops in recycled aggregate concrete columns: Experimental and numerical study

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: Through experimentation and simulation analysis of GFRP-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete columns and steel-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete columns, it was found that while GFRP-reinforced columns have lower axial strength, they exhibit higher ductility indices. There is good consistency observed among the experimental results, numerical simulations, and theoretical predictions for GRAC columns.

Structural assessment of eccentrically loaded GFRP reinforced circular concrete columns: Experiments and finite element analysis

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural performance of GFRP reinforced circular concrete columns with polypropylene macro synthetic fibers (GMSFRC columns) and compared them with identical steel bars reinforced concrete columns (SMSFRC columns) under concentric and eccentric loading. The experimental results showed that SMSFRC columns had higher axial load-carrying capacity and lower deformation capacity compared to GMSFRC columns. Both types of columns exhibited similar failure behavior, and the finite element analysis model predicted the structural behavior of GMSFRC columns with good accuracy.

Reliability analysis of strength models for short-concrete columns under concentric loading with FRP rebars through Artificial Neural Network

Afaq Ahmad et al.

Summary: The utilization of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in concrete columns has increased over the past decade, with researchers proposing equations to understand their load-carrying capacity. However, there are reservations in current design practices regarding the use of FRP bars as main reinforcement in columns. A study using Artificial Neural Network models and a new proposed equation aims to provide reliability analysis of physical models in predicting the effect of FRP in columns under concentric loading at the ultimate limit state. Results show that the ANN model and proposed equation yield closer results to experimental values compared to counterpart physical models.

Structural Behavior of GFRP-Reinforced Circular HFRC Columns Under Concentric and Eccentric Loading

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: This study compares the structural behavior of steel-reinforced concrete columns and GFRP-reinforced concrete columns with hybrid fibers, showing that SHFC columns have better axial strength and ultimate deflections while GHFC columns exhibit higher ductility indices. The failure modes and reductions in axial strength under eccentricities are similar between steel and GHFC columns. The newly developed empirical model for predicting the axial strength of GHFC columns shows close agreement with experimental results, supporting the proposed model's application.
