Non-dimensional analysis of the bandgap formation in a locally resonant metamaterial pipe conveying fluid

R. Fernandes et al.

Summary: The effects of fluid flow velocity on the edge frequencies of the bandgap in an acoustic metamaterial pipe are investigated. Two methodologies are presented to predict the bandgap formation. It is shown that an increase in fluid velocity decreases the bandgap width, while an increase in the mass ratio of the fluid and the resonators to the pipe leads to a slight decrease and increase in the bandgap width, respectively.

Vibration self-suppression of spinning fluid-conveying pipes composed of periodic composites

Feng Liang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel fluid-conveying phononic crystal pipe model and explores the transverse free vibration and wave attenuation performance of the spinning periodic structure using a planar spectral element model. The study reveals the peculiar band gap characteristic of the structure and investigates the effects of the number of cells, flow velocity, and component geometry on the natural frequencies and coupled band gaps.

A versatile friction model for Newtonian liquids flowing under unsteady regimes in pipes

Douglas Monteiro Andrade et al.

Summary: This work presents a quasi-2D unsteady friction model to predict the transient responses of a Newtonian fluid under turbulent regimes. The model simplifies the mathematical structure by considering the fluid flow as a pseudo-mixture and determines material constants using a two-region turbulent viscosity model. A numerical study is conducted to identify the spatial distribution of constituents within the mixture to find the most cost-effective solution.

Transmission and bandgap characteristics of a duct mounted with multiple hybrid Helmholtz resonators

Zhenfang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a duct mounted with multiple hybrid Helmholtz resonators (HHRs) for low-frequency noise control in a piping system, showing superior transmission loss performance in the low-frequency region compared to traditional Helmholtz resonators. The study investigates the impact of the perforated plate on damping and band structure of the periodic pipe, revealing the underlying physical mechanism and examining the effect on bandgap coupling characteristics. Additionally, experimental validation is carried out to confirm the acoustic performance of the newly designed HHRs.

Reduction of flexural vibration of a fluid-filled pipe with attached vibration absorbers

Jiang-hai Wu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the application of dynamic vibration absorbers in pipe systems, using periodically attached DVAs to reduce vibrations in a broader frequency band. Analysis was conducted on wave propagation in the vibration system, band-gap formation mechanisms, and the impact of system parameters on band-gap behavior, ultimately leading to more effective control of pipe vibration.

Phononic Band Gap and Free Vibration Analysis of Fluid-Conveying Pipes with Periodically Varying Cross-Section

Hao Yu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the vibration suppression performance and natural properties of fluid-conveying pipes with periodically varying cross-sections. The flexural wave equation for substructure pipes is established based on the classical beam model and traveling wave property, and the spectral element method is used for semi-analytical solutions. The paper reveals that the band gap of the pipe system is induced by geometrical differences in the substructure cross-section, and the number of cells does not contribute to the band gap region but has significant effects on amplitude attenuation, natural frequencies, and mode shapes. The impact of fluid-structure interaction is more evident in pipes with smaller numbers of cells, and the spectral element method is shown to be more effective than the transfer matrix method for analyzing the characteristics of band gap and free vibration of dynamical structures in phononic crystals.

Vibration wave propagation analysis of a liquid-filled pipe-plate coupled system with multiple supports

Jiang-hai Wu et al.

Summary: This paper establishes the governing equation of the pipe-plate coupled system using an impedance synthesis method and validates the theoretical derivation through comparisons with finite element model results. The influence of the elastic plate on vibration bandgap is analyzed, and the vibration propagation characteristics of the pipe-plate configuration are studied from the perspective of energy flow.
