Effects of SARA fractions on low temperature properties of asphalt binders

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of chemical fractions on the low temperature rheological behaviors of asphalt binders. Results showed that the SARA fractions were closely related to the complex modulus and phase angle of asphalt binders, with asphaltene content affecting creep stiffness modulus as well. Additionally, the glass transition temperature of asphalt binders was mainly determined by saturates and aromatics fractions, while an increase in asphaltene content resulted in higher Tg values. Linear regression analysis revealed significant relationships between SARA fractions and low temperature properties of asphalt binders.

Evaluation of solvents for asphalt extraction

Peter Mikhailenko et al.

Summary: The laboratory evaluation of multiple asphalt extraction solvents found that chlorinated solvents, such as trichloroethylene, performed the best in dissolving the binder. Some alternative agents showed nearly as effective performance as trichloroethylene, making them viable substitutes.

Chemical and Performance Characteristics of Rejuvenated Bituminous Materials with High Reclaimed Asphalt Content

Gurunath Guduru et al.

Summary: The study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of waste vegetable oil as a rejuvenator in restoring the properties of recycled asphalt mixes. Results showed that waste vegetable oil can reinstate lighter fractions of bitumen, but rejuvenated bitumen may have inferior fatigue resistance compared to virgin bitumen. However, the fatigue performance of recycled asphalt mixes containing rejuvenated bitumen was still satisfactory.

Asphaltenes in asphalt: Direct observation and evaluation of their impacts on asphalt properties

Yuhong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of asphaltenes in different types of asphalt and their impacts on the asphalt properties. It was found that the dispersion and formation of asphaltene particles vary depending on the asphalt source, with asphaltene content playing a predominant role in determining viscosity and asphaltene morphology likely affecting the derived ductility of asphalt.

Understanding the role of waste cooking oil residue during the preparation of rubber asphalt

Jianmin Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the compatibility of rubber asphalt was significantly improved by pre-swelling the ground tire rubber (GTR) with waste cooking oil residue (WCOR) prior to preparation, compared to other methods such as untreated GTR or simultaneous blending of GTR and WCOR. Chemical and compositional characterization suggested that the improved compatibility was mainly attributed to the extended release of natural rubber (NR) and traces of synthetic rubber (SR) and inorganic filler into the asphalt phase.
