Ferroelastic-switching-driven large shear strain and piezoelectricity in a hybrid ferroelectric

Yuzhong Hu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a large shear strain in the hybrid ferroelectric C6H5N(CH3)(3)CdCl3, achieving up to 21.5% strain, two orders of magnitude greater than traditional piezoelectrics. This is attributed to organic molecules preventing 180 degrees polarization switching, showing potential for lightweight and high-energy-density devices.

Inverse Flexoelectret Effect: Bending Dielectrics by a Uniform Electric Field

Xin Wen et al.

Summary: This study introduces an inverse flexoelectret effect in silicone elastomers to overcome the size limitations of traditional flexoelectricity, allowing for the fabrication of a flexing actuator capable of generating large curvature at the millimeter length scale with excellent actuation performance. Theoretical analysis suggests that this phenomenon originates from the interplay of electrets and Maxwell stress, opening up possibilities for applying macroscopic flexoelectricity in actuators and flexible electronics.

Direct observation of nanoscale dynamics of ferroelectric degradation

Qianwei Huang et al.

Summary: The failure of polarization reversal induced by cyclic electric loading in ferroelectric materials has been a long-standing challenge that negatively impacts their application in devices where reliability is critical. While space charges or injected charges are believed to dominate ferroelectric degradation, the physics behind this phenomenon remains unclear. Through in-situ biasing transmission electron microscopy, the researchers discovered a change in charge distribution in thin ferroelectrics during cyclic electric loading, with charge accumulation at domain walls being the main reason for the formation of c domains.

Control of polarization in bulk ferroelectrics by mechanical dislocation imprint

Marion Hoefling et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel method to manipulate the domain structure of ferroelectric materials by mechanically imprinting dislocation networks, leading to significant improvements in electrical properties such as dielectric and electromechanical response. This innovative microstructural approach offers new opportunities for tailoring functional materials.

Bi2WO6 lead-free ferroelectrics: microstructure design, polar behavior and photovoltaic performance

Xiang He et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared BWO ceramics with different microstructures using precursor morphology control and spark plasma sintering. Excellent polar properties and photovoltaic properties were obtained, with T-BWO ceramics showing higher remnant polarization, piezoelectric coefficient, and short circuit photocurrent compared to R-BWO ceramics. The findings suggest a simple and feasible microstructure engineering approach to manipulate the ferroelectricity and photovoltaic properties of layer-structured materials.
