Micromechanics of machining and wear in hard and brittle materials

Brian R. Lawn et al.

Summary: Hard and brittle solids with covalent/ionic bonding are widely used in modern manufacturing technologies, and optimizing shaping processes can reduce manufacturing time and cost while extending component longevity. However, the same processes can also contribute to wear and fatigue degradation in service. Education development of advanced finishing protocols for this class of solids requires a comprehensive understanding of damage mechanisms at small-scale contacts from a materials perspective. The role of microstructure in material removal modes is highlighted, and pathways to future research—experimental, analytical, and computational—are indicated.

Influences of grain size, alloy composition, and temperature on mechanical characteristics of Si100-xGex alloys during indentation process

Van-Trung Pham et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the mechanical characteristics of Si100-xGex alloys during indentation, finding that single crystalline specimens have higher hardness, loading force, and Young's modulus compared to polycrystalline specimens. The results also showed that as grain size decreases, loading force and hardness decrease, and grain boundaries play a significant role in material deformation behavior. Increasing silicon content in the alloy compositions led to higher hardness and Young's modulus, while increasing temperature resulted in reduced hardness and Young's modulus due to increased atomic displacement and shear strain.

Effect of inclusion on 4H-SiC during nano-scratching from an atomistic perspective

Yuhua Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of inclusions on scratching behavior during SiC epitaxy was explored through molecular dynamics modeling. It was found that inclusions significantly affect the microstructure, atomistic behavior, and machinability. Eliminating inclusions requires a high penetration depth, but increases the sensitivity of process parameters.

Removal behavior of micropipe in 4H-SiC during micromachining

Yuhua Huang et al.

Summary: Silicon carbide is a good semiconductor material due to its performance in high-voltage and high-frequency fields, but defects like micropipe can impact device performance. Research shows that adjusting penetration depth during micromachining may not completely eliminate the effect of micropipe, but different dynamic behaviors of 4H-SiC under various penetration depths could be a strategy for detecting or controlling the impact of micropipe.
