Unprece dente d age-hardening and its structural requirement in a severely deformed Al-Cu-Mg alloy

Ran Yang et al.

Summary: A gradient nanostructured surface layer was produced in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy through surface sliding friction treatment at liquid nitrogen temperature, achieving unprecedented age-hardening after aging treatment with microhardness values exceeding previous maximum values. Enhanced grain boundary segregation instead of precipitation is believed to be responsible for this substantial age-hardening.

Study fatigue crack initiation in TiB2/Al-Cu-Mg composite by in-situ SEM and X-ray microtomography

Jiwei Geng et al.

Summary: The study found that fatigue cracks in particle-reinforced aluminium matrix composites mostly initiate at multiple sites associated with TiB2 and second phases (S/θ), and only a few cracks are caused by matrix fracture close to high density dislocation zones around TiB2. The growth capability of initiated cracks depends on their stress intensity factors at the crack tip, with only cracks initiated from the largest-sized (S/θ + TiB2) cluster developing into main cracks. During main crack evolution, small cracks grow along slip traces and are hindered by grain boundaries and/or TiB2.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the electron-beam welded joints of cast Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructures, hardness distribution and strengthening mechanisms of the electron-beam welded joints of cast Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy plate were investigated. It was found that the precipitation of fine Omega, theta' plates and dispersed precipitates after post-welding heat treatment is the main reason for the increase in strength of the welded joint.

Synthesis and Characterization of Silicon Nitride Reinforced Al-Mg-Zn Alloy Composites

G. Anbuchezhiyan et al.

Summary: In this study, aluminium metal matrix composite reinforced with hard silicon nitride (Si3N4) particles was experimentally synthesized using squeeze casting technique. The inclusion of Si3N4 significantly improved the mechanical behavior, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of the synthesized composites, as observed through various tests. Scanning Electron microscope micrograph of worn surfaces revealed deep grooving associated with abrasive wear due to the presence of Si3N4.

Summary: The presence of Fe-rich intermetallic phases in Al-Cu alloy can significantly affect its mechanical properties, particularly reducing its ductility. The size and quantity of these phases increase with higher Fe content, leading to a decrease in elongation without much effect on ultimate tensile strength and yield strength.

Investigation on peripheral coarse grains and precipitation behavior of in-situ TiB2/Al-Cu-Mg composites with various Mg contents

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that Mg content strongly influences the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiB2 reinforced Al-Cu-Mg composites. Increasing Mg content results in deeper fine dynamic recrystallized grains on the surface and improved mechanical properties, but excessive Mg content can lead to the formation of precipitation free zones, ultimately reducing hardness and ultimate tensile strength.

Precipitation-hardness map for Al-Cu-Mg alloy (AA2024-T3)

V. A. Esin et al.

Summary: The precipitation map of Al-Cu-Mg alloy (AA2024-T3) was obtained by combining differential scanning calorimetry analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations, revealing the appearance of equilibrium S-Al2CuMg phase at 85 degrees C after 1000 h of ageing. Hardness values showed that the maximum hardness was located at the boundary between S-phase + GPB zones and S-phase regions for all studied temperatures.

Enhanced grain refinement and mechanical properties of a high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy induced by TiC nano-particles

Kai Zhao et al.

Summary: The addition of TiC nano-particles in high-strength aluminum alloy 7050 leads to significant grain refinement and improved mechanical properties through growth restriction effect and heterogeneous nucleation. The alignment of TiC nano-particles along extrusion direction after subsequent heat treatment contributes to the enhanced tensile properties, ductility, and refined precipitates in the composite. These synergistic effects result in optimized mechanical properties of TiCp/7050 composite, providing new insights for controlling matrix grains of Zr-containing Al alloys and developing low-cost Al matrix composites.

Strengthening and Weakening Effects of Particles on Strength and Ductility of SiC Particle Reinforced Al-Cu-Mg Alloys Matrix Composites

Zhiyu Yang et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of SiC particles on the strength and ductility of composite materials, using different mechanical properties of Al-Cu-Mg alloy matrices and manufacturing composites in 18 combinations. The critical particle size for optimal ductility was identified, and the strengthening limit and match range for effective strengthening were defined based on particle size and matrix strength. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing the mechanical properties of particle-reinforced metal matrix composites.

Good combination of strength and corrosion resistance in an Al-Cu-Mg alloy processed by a short-cycled thermomechanical treatment

L. Mei et al.

Summary: The research found that the warm rolled alloy showed significant improvement in strength and corrosion resistance after appropriate aging, with good ductility. This improvement was mainly attributed to a more homogeneous distribution of nanosized precipitates in the grain interior and the absence of continuous grain boundary precipitates.
