In-situ investigation of plasticity in a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy: Slip mechanisms, strain localization, and partitioning

Shaolou Wei et al.

Summary: The study focused on an in-situ mechanistic investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (alpha+beta) alloy, revealing a moderate partitioning trend between alpha- and beta-phases and prominent strain localization bands influenced by texture-facilitated prismatic a slip activation and near-ideal slip transfer conditions across the alpha/beta phase boundaries. Postmortem and in-situ damage analyses confirmed the significant role of these long-range strain localization bands in accelerating surface cracking events.

Modeling of quasi-trimodal microstructures formation in large-size Ti-alloy parts under near-isothermal local loading forming process

M. Meng et al.

Summary: In the study, a thermo-mechanical-microstructural FE model was developed to accurately predict the complex microstructural development in NLLF of large-size Ti-alloy parts. The distribution and relative amount of constituent phases in different loading regions were found to be greatly influenced by processing parameters such as initial heating temperature, die loading speed, and loading pass. The formation mechanism of quasi-trimodal microstructures and an optimized processing scheme were proposed to regulate and control the microstructure morphology.

Mesoscale deformation mechanisms in relation with slip and grain boundary sliding in TA15 titanium alloy during tensile deformation

Yanxi Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the mesoscale deformation mechanisms of titanium alloy with tri-modal microstructure were investigated using quasi-in-situ tensile tests, SEM, EBSD, and quantitative slip trace analyses. Different slip behaviors and grain boundary sliding were observed in equiaxed alpha (alpha p) and lamellar alpha (alpha l) grains. The study found that crystallographic orientation and geometrical orientation play crucial roles in grain boundary sliding.

Exploration of the static softening behavior and dislocation density evolution of TA15 titanium alloy during double-pass hot compression deformation

Qing Ma et al.

Summary: The static softening behavior and dislocation density evolution of TA15 titanium alloy during double-pass hot deformation were investigated. The results showed that the globularization behavior of primary a phase is emerged during the inter-pass of double-pass hot deformation. The groove of primary a phase is preferentially generated when the inter-pass holding time within 1000s. Additionally, the dislocation density in the inter-pass gradually decreases with the holding time and deformation temperature increasing.

Dislocation-dominated void nucleation in shock-spalled single crystal copper: Mechanism and anisotropy

C. Li et al.

Summary: Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate dislocation-dominated void nucleation in single crystal copper under shock loading and spall failure. The study found that the spall strength is influenced by the orientation of the crystal, with group II orientations showing the highest spall strength. The formation of stable immobile dislocations was found to play a key role in void nucleation.

FFT-based simulations of slip and kink bands formation in 3D polycrystals: Influence of strain gradient crystal plasticity

Aldo Marano et al.

Summary: The study investigates the ability of softening strain gradient plasticity to simulate intragranular plastic slip localization modes, proposes a more suitable differentiation operator, and implements and discusses four practical interface conditions. The results show that gradient effects strongly influence the mechanisms of selection between slip and kink banding.

Fracture initiation in a single crystal copper edge-crack specimen for various crystallographic orientations

Suman Paik et al.

Summary: The study aims to determine the fracture initiation of a single crystal copper edge-crack specimen under tensile load, considering crystallographic anisotropy, strain hardening, and damage accumulation. By using a damage criterion coupled with crystal plasticity finite element method, material softening after peak load was determined, with damage evolution as a function of maximum shear strain within the crystal plasticity framework. The analysis predicts fracture initiation of cracks along different crystallographic orientations.

Microstructure dependent strain localization during primary hot working of TA15 titanium alloy: Behavior and mechanism

X. Q. Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of strain localization during hot working of TA15 titanium alloy was explored using hat-shaped specimens. It was found that the microstructure plays a key role in strain localization, with lamellar orientation influencing the potential for localization. The findings provide insights for designing processing routes to effectively control strain localization.
