Nanosized precipitates activating ultrahigh strength of an ultrafine-grained ferritic steel during dynamic deformation

J. W. Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of ultrafine grained steel containing nanosized Fe3C and VC particles under different strain rates through tensile tests and microstructural analysis. The results show that the presence of nanosized particles enhances the peak stress of the steel, but at high strain rates, it may lead to softening behavior and reduced elongation to fracture.

Clustering, nano-scale precipitation and strengthening of steels

Zhiping Xiong et al.

Summary: Continuous innovations in design of advanced structural steels play a crucial role in the future progress of manufacturing, automotive and construction industries. Events at nano and atomic scales are essential in controlling steel strength, with strengths of 1-1.5 GPa realized in nano-scale precipitation strengthened steels. Modern characterization techniques allow for insight into mechanisms of solute atoms clustering, nano-precipitate formation, and interactions with dislocations contributing to strength.

Mechanical response of dislocation interaction with grain boundary in ultrafine-grained interstitial-free steel

Hongxing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the motion of dislocations and their interactions with grain boundaries in ultrafine-grained IF steel under tensile and compressive conditions. Before macro-yielding, dislocations move towards grain boundaries and are absorbed, leading to a decrease in dislocation density; after macro-yielding, dislocations emit from grain boundaries, resulting in hardening effects and discontinuous yielding behavior.

Hot workability characteristics of low-density Fe-4Al-1Ni ferritic steel

Xiangyu Xu et al.

Summary: The hot-working behavior of a low-density Fe-4Al-1Ni ferritic steel at the deformation temperature in the range of 700-950 degrees C and the strain rate in the range of 0.01-10 s(-1) was studied, including the deformation mechanism, apparent deformation activation energy, and recrystallization behavior. The experimental results showed that increasing temperature and strain rate contribute to the occurrence of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization.

The significance of Fe2Zr interface precipitation in governing δ-ferrite refinement in low-density Fe-4Al ferritic steel

P. C. Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the significance of refinement of delta-ferritic grain in low-density steel was addressed by investigating the grain boundary precipitation of Fe2Zr. The experiments showed that the presence of Fe2Zr effectively pinned delta-ferritic grains in Zr-containing steels, leading to refinement compared to Zr-free steel. Additionally, the analysis revealed a semi-coherent interface between Fe2Zr and delta-ferrite with a determined orientation relationship.

Summary: The strengthening mechanisms of RAFM steels include high-angle grain boundaries, subgrain boundaries, M23C6, and MX carbide precipitates, which can enhance high-temperature strength and improve creep properties. Additionally, methods such as oxide dispersion-strengthening and severe plastic deformation can effectively improve the performance of the steel, increasing creep life and overall strength.

Multiphase precipitation and its strengthening mechanism in a V-containing austenite-based low density steel

Mingxiang Liu et al.

Summary: Utilizing a two-step heat treatment process with multiple precipitates significantly enhances the strength and strain hardening rate of austenite-based low density steel. The combination of shearing and Orowan mechanisms from various types of precipitates contributes to the high strength and strain hardening ability of the steel. Fine planar slip bands and dispersive dislocation localization further strengthen the material.

Mechanical properties and precipitation behavior of high strength hot-rolled ferritic steel containing Nb and V

Esther Hutten et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and precipitation behavior of hot-rolled microalloyed steels with varied Nb and V additions were investigated. The steels exhibited a good combination of strength, ductility, and hole expansion ratio, with strength increasing with increasing Nb and V content. The favorable hole expansion behavior was attributed to fine ferrite grain size and uniformity of the microstructure, as well as the formation of fine precipitates of Nb and V carbonitrides.
