The addition of a Ni interlayer is effective in preventing the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds and improving the metallurgical bonds in the 316L/Ti6Al4V bimetallic structure.
The 316L/Ti6Al4V bimetallic structure (BS) was fabricated by laser melting deposition (LMD) via introducing a Ni interlayer. The results showed that the addition of Ni interlayer was effective in preventing the formation of brittle Ti-Fe intermetallic compounds. Good metallurgical bonds of 316L/Ni and Ni/Ti6Al4V were obtained, and a certain amount of reactions occurred between the Ni interlayer and Ti6Al4V part. The reaction layer consisting of TiNi3, TiNi and Ti2Ni was formed in the Ni/Ti6Al4V interface, and the thicknesses of the TiNi3, TiNi and Ti2Ni layers were about 20 mu m, 70 mu m, and 60 mu m, respectively. The average ultimate tensile strength of the 316L/Ti6Al4V BS with Ni interlayer was 181.6 MPa, while the 316L/Ti6Al4V BS without Ni interlayer fractured during the LMD process.
