Strengthening contributions of dislocations and twins in warm-rolled TWIP steels

Y. Z. Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of warm rolling on the deformation mechanisms of TWIP steel. It is found that while dislocation multiplication always controls the maximum flow stress, deformation twinning becomes increasingly important for steels with larger warm rolling reductions. The twinning kinetics is enhanced by the high dislocation densities caused by warm rolling, leading to an enhancement of twinning-induced hardening.

Stress-assisted (γ→α′) and strain-induced (γ→ε→α′) phase transformation kinetics laws implemented in a crystal plasticity model for predicting strain path sensitive deformation of austenitic steels

Zhangxi Feng et al.

Summary: This paper formulates kinetics laws for stress-assisted and strain-induced austenite to martensite transformation within a crystal plasticity framework, enabling modeling of strain path sensitive elasto-plastic deformation of austenitic steels. The models take into account the evolution of crystallographic texture and directionality of deformation mechanisms in constituent phases, predicting the deformation behavior of metastable austenitic steels while incorporating a new numerical feature to model the epsilon-martensite morphology. Through calibrating with experimental data, the implementation successfully predicts stress-strain response, texture, and phase fractions of different phases.

Grain size dependence of twinning behaviors and resultant cryogenic impact toughness in high manganese austenitic steel

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: Two high manganese austenitic steels with different grain sizes were prepared to investigate size effect on twinning and cryogenic impact toughness. Increasing grain size from 11 to 47 μm enhanced Charpy impact absorbed energy by 36%, showing an inverse size effect on cryogenic impact toughness. The larger grain size resulted in better impact toughness at -196 degrees C due to stronger dynamic grain refinement, higher dislocation density, wider extended dislocations, and relatively homogeneous plastic deformation.

Unusual relationship between impact toughness and grain size in a high-manganese steel

Pan Xie et al.

Summary: High-manganese steels are important structural materials known for their excellent low-temperature toughness. A reversal relationship has been observed between impact toughness and grain size in these steels, where increasing grain size can drastically improve impact toughness, especially at low temperatures. This improvement is attributed to twinning induced plasticity and transformation induced plasticity effects in the coarse-grained steel.

Mechanical behaviour and microstructure of Fe-20/27Mn-4Al-0.3C low magnetic steel at room and cryogenic temperatures

Changsheng Li et al.

Summary: At low temperatures, the strength and plasticity of Fe-20Mn and Fe-27Mn steels are significantly improved, with TWIP and TRIP effects playing important roles. The work hardening rate of 20Mn steel is higher, but 27Mn steel has slightly lower ductility. Both steels exhibit ductile fracture at low temperatures.
