Implementation of a multi-grid operational wave forecast in the South Atlantic Ocean

R. M. Campos et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of an operational wave forecast system in the South Atlantic Ocean, which achieved a balance between model accuracy and computational cost by using a multi-grid scheme and fine-tuning the WAVEWATCH-III model. The forecast evaluation was performed based on wind speed and significant wave height, and the results showed high correlation coefficients and low errors.

Numerical Modelling of the Effects of the Gulf Stream on the Wave Characteristics

Sonia Ponce de Leon et al.

Summary: The study examines the influence of the Gulf Stream on wind wave characteristics, finding that wave-current interaction inside the current can lead to significant inhomogeneities in the wave field. When waves and currents align and oppose inside the current, wave energy increases, resulting in a peaked and elongated spectrum. The Gulf Stream widens the spectrum angular distribution, with significant wave height increasing with current velocity once waves enter the Gulf Stream.

Wave conditions encountered by ships-A report from a larger shipping company based on ERA5

Ulrik D. Nielsen et al.

Summary: This study reports on the wave conditions encountered by the fleet of Maersk Line, using data from 189 container ships collected over a three-year period. The study shows that weather routing and seamanship have an impact on significant wave height, but this effect is not as pronounced as previously reported in a different study. The study also highlights the temporal and spatial variation in encountered wave height along ship routes.

Assimilation of significant wave height from distributed ocean wave sensors

P. B. Smit et al.

Summary: In-situ ocean wave observations combined with data assimilation techniques can significantly enhance model forecast accuracy, particularly for extreme events. The implementation of a distributed sensor network has shown to have a positive impact on model skill at extremely low cost, with potential for further gains through refinements to assimilation strategies.

Extreme Waves in the Agulhas Current Region Inferred from SAR Wave Spectra and the SWAN Model

Sonia Ponce de Leon et al.

Summary: The study reveals a direct correlation between the Agulhas Current strength, Significant Wave Height (Hs), and Benjamin-Feir Index (BFI). The inclusion of ocean currents in the simulation results in broadened directional wave spectra, which transform due to current refraction. When waves and current are aligned, the spectral wave energy increases, leading to peaked, elongated, and widened spectra, with a decrease in peak period observed before abnormal sea states occur.

Spectral shapes and parameters from three different wave sensors

Anne Karin Magnusson et al.

Summary: The quality of wave measurements is crucial for various applications, including wave forecasting models validation and satellite calibration. By analyzing data from different sensors, it was found that while they provide similar measurements, there are significant differences that could impact design, operations, forecast verification, and climate monitoring.

Statistical model representing storm avoidance by merchant ships in the North Atlantic Ocean

Kaushik Sasmal et al.

Summary: The study presents a statistical model for storm avoidance by ships and applies it to a 25-year wave hindcast in the North Atlantic Ocean. The model relates storm intensity and ship distance from the storm center, showing the validity of the suggested storm avoidance model. The most significant uncertainty in the estimate stems from the choice of wave model, as demonstrated through comparison with other hindcast products.

A benchmarking exercise for environmental contours

Andreas F. Haselsteiner et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of an open benchmarking exercise where different environmental contour methods were blindly compared. The analysis showed significant differences between contours derived via different methods, with variability mainly arising from different joint distribution models and contour construction methods. The highest wave height value along a contour and the number of metocean data points outside a contour differed significantly between submissions.
