Antimicrobial activity of PvH4a, a peptide derived from histone H4 of Penaeus vannamei

Shen Yang et al.

Summary: The histone H4-derived peptide PvH4a exhibits strong antimicrobial activity, especially against Gram-negative bacteria. PvH4a increases the inner membrane permeability of V. parahaemolyticus and has no adverse effects on normal human cells.

PvHS9 is a novel in silico predicted antimicrobial peptide derived from hemocyanin of Penaeus vannamei

Shen Yang et al.

Summary: This study successfully predicted and validated two antimicrobial peptides, PvHS8 and PvHS9, from the small subunit of Penaeus vannamei hemocyanin. Both peptides exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with PvHS9 being the most potent. Structural analysis revealed that PvHS9 has a beta-sheet structure, and further experiments showed that its antimicrobial activity is attributed to membrane disruption and cell death in bacteria.

The genome of Nautilus pompilius illuminates eye evolution and biomineralization

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: The nautilus is the sole surviving externally shelled cephalopod from the Palaeozoic, holding an important phylogenetic position in understanding cephalopod evolution. The compact, minimalist genome of the nautilus exhibits slow evolutionary rates and multiple genomic innovations that shaped the evolution of the pinhole eye. The conserved molluscan biomineralization toolkit and lineage-specific repetitive low-complexity domains are crucial in constructing the nautilus shell.

Design, optimization, and nanotechnology of antimicrobial peptides: From exploration to applications

Peng Tan et al.

Summary: The abuse of antibiotics causing antibiotic resistance is a serious threat to human health, and antimicrobial peptides have become potential antibiotic alternatives due to their unique mechanisms. Despite the problems with natural AMPs, advancements in molecular design, optimization strategies, and nanotechnology have shown potential to improve their properties. Progress in the design and optimization strategies of AMPs lay a theoretical foundation for the development of peptide-based antimicrobial nanomaterials, providing more effective antibiotic alternatives.
