The impact of supercritical CO2 on the pore structure and storage capacity of shales

Ahmed Fatah et al.

Summary: The injection of supercritical CO2 (SCCO2) has a significant impact on the petrophysical properties and pore structure of shales during geological storage. The alteration of mineralogy and pore structure is influenced by SCCO2 treatment, with clay-rich shales showing greater changes in pore volume compared to quartz-rich shales. The development of micro-cracks in the surface of Mancos shale creates new pores and increases pore volume. The results provide important insights into the effect of CO2 on the pore structure and mineralogical alteration of shale.

Influence of CO2 retention mechanism storage in Alberta tight oil and gas reservoirs at Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, Canada: hysteresis modeling and appraisal

Perumal Rajkumar et al.

Summary: The paper highlights the importance and effectiveness of using CO2 storage or EOR technology to address CO2 emissions issues. Through simulation studies on oil and gas reservoirs in the Canadian sedimentary basin, it demonstrates the high retention capacity of CO2 in these tight formations.
