Impacts of sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane on the morphology, sulfur isotope, and trace element content of authigenic pyrite in marine sediments of the northern South China Sea

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the morphological and geochemical characteristics of pyrite in a seepage area of the South China Sea. The results suggest that sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane significantly influences the formation of pyrite, which can serve as a geological archive of modern and ancient oceans. Pyrite formed in seepage-impacted sediments allows for the identification of methane seepage and characterization of the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, sulfur, and trace elements.

Diagenesis of Magnetic Minerals in Active/Relict Methane Seep: Constraints From Rock Magnetism and Mineralogical Records From Bay of Bengal

Summary: The study investigated the complex magnetic mineral assemblages and zonation in sediment cores from cold seep sites in the Bay of Bengal, providing insights into the controls of structural and diagenetic processes on sediment magnetism. The high-resolution seismic data revealed distinct sediment magnetic zones and variations in rock magnetic properties, highlighting the formation and evolution of magnetic minerals in response to diagenetic dissolution and precipitation processes.

Decrypting geochemical signatures in subsurface Niger delta sediments: Implication for provenance, weathering, and paleo-environmental conditions

Summary: The geochemical signatures of sandstone and shale in the hydrocarbon-producing zones of the Agbada Formation in the Niger Delta Basin were analyzed to determine provenance, evaluate weathering intensity, and reconstruct paleo-redox conditions in the depositional environment. The results indicate moderate to intense weathering conditions in the source area, predominantly felsic sources, and an oxic-suboxic depositional environment.
