Control of Crystallinity and Stereocomplexation of Synthetic Carbohydrate Polymers from D- and L-Xylose

Thomas M. McGuire et al.

Summary: Manipulating the stereochemistry of polymers can alter their physical properties, with crystalline polyethers derived from d- and l-xylose showing enhanced thermal properties compared to enantiopure polymers. In contrast, atactic polymers from racemic mixtures of monomers are amorphous, and the polymer hydroxyl groups are amenable to post-polymerisation functionalization.

Polymers from Sugars and Cyclic Anhydrides: Ring-Opening Copolymerization of a D-Xylose Anhydrosugar Oxetane

Thomas M. McGuire et al.

Summary: In this study, a D-xylose 3,5-anhydrosugar derivative was used as an oxetane co-monomer in the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) with cyclic anhydrides to synthesize a family of seven novel sugar-derived polyesters with up to 100% renewable content. These polyesters are thermally robust and exhibit a broad range of glass-transition temperatures, allowing for further postpolymerization functionalization. The living character of the ROCOP process was also utilized to synthesize block copolymers through sequential co-monomer addition experiments.

Sulfated poly-amido-saccharides (sulPASs) are anticoagulants in vitro and in vivo

Maria Varghese et al.

Summary: Sulfated poly-amido-saccharides (sulPASs) have been reported as effective heparin mimetics, inhibiting intrinsic pathway of coagulation with activity positively correlated to molecular weight and degree of sulfation. They are not degraded by heparanases and non-hemolytic, showing potential as synthetic anticoagulants with comparable bleeding risk to heparin in in vivo murine model.
