Photomodulation of Transmembrane Transport and Potential by Stiff-Stilbene Based Bis(thio)ureas

Sander J. Wezenberg et al.

Summary: Membrane transport proteins have important regulatory functions in biology and can respond to environmental stimuli. Using bis(thio)ureas derived from stiff-stilbene, photocontrol of transmembrane transport and electric potential has been demonstrated through UV-vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The (Z)-isomers show stronger binding properties and are more active in transmembrane transport compared to the (E)-isomers.

Photoactuating Artificial Muscles of Motor Amphiphiles as an Extracellular Matrix Mimetic Scaffold for Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Shaoyu Chen et al.

Summary: Scientists have been working on developing cell culture scaffold materials that mimic the native extracellular matrix (ECM) for potential applications in regenerative medicine. However, creating next-generation synthetic materials with hierarchically oriented supramolecular structures, which are both dynamic and responsive to external stimuli, remains a significant challenge. In this study, researchers have successfully created supramolecular assemblies called motor amphiphiles (MAs) that mimic the hydrogel nature of the ECM and exhibit intrinsic dynamic behavior. These assemblies can be actuated by light, similar to muscle contractions, and have the potential to serve as responsive ECM mimetic scaffolds for human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs).

Self-Assembly of Photoresponsive Molecular Amphiphiles in Aqueous Media

Shaoyu Chen et al.

Summary: Amphiphilic molecules with the ability to self-assemble in aqueous environments exhibit a wide range of structures and functions. By incorporating photoresponsive motifs, these molecules can be designed to create non-invasive supramolecular systems that respond to light in water. The delicate balance between structural design, self-assembling conditions, and external stimuli allows for the development of dynamic functions in isotropic and anisotropic systems, leading to applications in soft adaptive materials and controlled delivery systems.

Push-Pull Stiff-Stilbene: Proton-Gated Visible-Light Photoswitching and Acid-Catalyzed Isomerization

David Villaron et al.

Summary: The donor-acceptor substituted stiff-stilbene molecule undergoes isomerization induced by visible light and the process is inhibited by protonation, which restricts the photochromic properties. Furthermore, the addition of a mild acid triggers fast thermal back-isomerization, providing a new avenue for the stiff-stilbene photoswitches.

A photoswitchable strapped calix[4]pyrrole receptor: highly effective chloride binding and release

David Villaron et al.

Summary: This study presents a Calix[4]pyrrole receptor that can be reversibly switched by light between a strong chloride-binding Z-isomer and a weakly binding E-isomer. The significant difference in binding affinity between the Z- and E-isomer is quantified using H-1 NMR and ITC titrations in MeCN. Structural insights into the photogenerated E-isomer and the chloride-bound receptors are provided through DFT calculations and X-ray crystallographic analysis, offering new prospects for on-demand binding and release in extractions and membrane transport processes.
