Supercritical CO2-ethanol extraction of oil from green coffee beans: optimization conditions and bioactive compound identification

Paloma Barajas-Alvarez et al.

Summary: In this study, a supercritical CO2-ethanol extraction method was optimized to obtain green coffee oil rich in bioactive compounds. The extraction yield and total phenolic compound content of green coffee supercritical extract (GCSE) were evaluated using a central composite design, showing that pressure and cosolvent content significantly affected yield, while temperature and cosolvent content impacted total phenolic compound content. The optimal conditions predicted an extraction yield of 7.7% with a total phenol content of 5.4 mg gallic acid equivalent g GCSE(-1), indicating the high chemical quality and antioxidant potential of GCSE for functional ingredient use.

Characterization of Tempranillo negro (VN21), a high phenolic content grapevine Tempranillo clone, through UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS polyphenol profiling

Carolina Royo et al.

Summary: The phenolic composition of wine is influenced by grapevine cultivar and clone genotype, as demonstrated in this study of Tempranillo negro. This new intense dark black berry color variant accumulates higher concentrations of anthocyanins, leading to unique characteristics in both the grape berry and wine. The application of phenol chromatographic analyses to grapevine clonal selection is exemplified through the comparison of RJ43 and VN21 clones.

Supercritical CO2 extraction to obtain Lippia thymoides Mart. & Schauer (Verbenaceae) essential oil rich in thymol and evaluation of its antimicrobial activity

Sebastiao Gomes Silva et al.

Summary: This paper reports, for the first time, the extraction of Lippia thymoides leaf essential oil by supercritical CO2. The essential oil samples mainly contained thymol as the major constituent, and exhibited antimicrobial activity against fungi C. albicans and C. tropicalis. However, it did not show activity against E. coli.

A Review on Stems Composition and Their Impact on Wine Quality

Marie Blackford et al.

Summary: Research has shown that using grape stems has the potential to enhance the aromatic complexity and freshness of wines, but there is a lack of specific studies on the impact of compounds extracted from stems. Various factors, such as grape variety, stem state, and incorporation method, influence the effect of stems on wine quality.

Phenolic Composition of Grape Stems from Different Spanish Varieties and Vintages

Irene Esparza et al.

Summary: This study characterized grape stem extracts from different grape varieties from two vintages (2016 and 2018), revealing significant differences in antioxidant activity, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TF) among different varieties and vintages. It was observed that extreme temperatures and accumulated precipitations in 2016 had an impact on polyphenol synthesis, resulting in higher TPC and TF values in grape stems from the 2018 vintage. Statistical analysis showed that environmental factors such as light, temperature, and precipitations have different impacts on polyphenol synthesis depending on the specific compound family.
