Application of endolysin LysSTG2 as a potential biocontrol agent against planktonic and biofilm cells of Pseudomonas on various food and food contact surfaces

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The novel endolysin LysSTG2 from Salmonella-lytic bacteriophage STG2 was successfully cloned, overexpressed, and characterized. It exhibited strong control over Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. putida in bottled water and biofilms, showing potential for application in food processing facilities with further optimization needed.

Investigation of phage and molasses interactions for the biocontrol of E. coli O157:H7

Sefika Evran et al.

Summary: Resistance to antibiotics is a critical health problem worldwide, and finding alternative treatment methods is a priority for researchers. Molasses, which contains antimicrobial components, has been used to eliminate resistant bacteria. The study found that molasses can increase the size of phage plaques and the burst size of phages. There was no synergistic effect between phages and molasses, but the antimicrobial activities of molasses components and the effect of molasses on phage activity were demonstrated.

The endolysin of theAcinetobacter baumanniiphage vB_AbaP_D2 shows broad antibacterial activity

Yuyu Yuan et al.

Summary: The study identified the bacteriophage D2 with potent antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly Acinetobacter baumannii, and its endolysin Abtn-4 showed the ability to reduce biofilm formation. Abtn-4 exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as phage-resistant bacterial mutants. These findings suggest that endolysin Abtn-4 may serve as a promising candidate for the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

A Novel Real-Time Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Combined with Immunomagnetic Beads Separation and Ethidium Bromide Monoazide Treatment for Rapid and Ultrasensitive Detection of Viable Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Milk

Hu Chen et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel method for rapid detection of viable E. coli O157:H7 in milk without enrichment, utilizing real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (Rti-LAMP) combined with immunomagnetic beads separation (IMS) and ethidium bromide monoazide (EMA) treatment. The assay demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in detecting low levels of viable E. coli O157:H7 in milk, with the whole process completed in 4 hours.

Lysins breaking down the walls of Gram-negative bacteria, no longer a no-go

Diana Gutierrez et al.

Summary: Phage lysins are advanced antibacterials that degrade peptidoglycan, now being developed as effective treatment against Gram-negative pathogens. Three research approaches have been explored: lysins with a positively charged C-terminus for disrupting outer membranes, physical/chemical methods for membrane integrity, and protein engineering for membrane permeability.

Yanhua Jiang et al.

Summary: The recombinant endolysin LysSP1 encoded by Salmonella Typhimurium lytic bacteriophage SLMP1 was obtained in this study, and EDTA was found to enhance its bactericidal activity. LysSP1 showed strong bactericidal activity against Salmonella Typhimurium, exhibited good stability, and demonstrated broad-spectrum bactericidal ability.
