The therapeutic efficacy of quercetin in combination with antiviral drugs in hospitalized COVID-19 patients: A randomized controlled trial

Mojtaba Shohan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of quercetin in combination with remdesivir and favipiravir in severe hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Quercetin was found to prevent disease progression and reduce inflammatory markers related to SARS-Cov-2 pathogenesis. However, the impact on mortality and ICU-admission duration was not significant.

Comparison of quercetin and rutin inhibitory influence on Tartary buckwheat starch digestion in vitro and their differences in binding sites with the digestive enzyme

Libo Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that quercetin and rutin reduced starch digestion by altering starch structure and inhibiting digestive enzyme activity, with quercetin showing a stronger inhibitory effect. Rutin interacts with enzymes mainly through C-H and O-H on the glycoside structure, causing steric hindrance and limiting the inhibitory effect of quercetin. The glycoside structure weakens rutin's inhibition of digestive enzymes in free forms rather than affecting its anti-digestive effects in bound forms with starch.

C-methyl flavonoid from the leaves of Cleistocalyx conspersipunctatus: a-glucosidase inhibitory, molecular docking simulation and biosynthetic pathway

Haifang Du et al.

Summary: In this study, a new C-methyl flavonoid, farrerol 7-O-beta-D-(6-O-galloyl) glucopyranoside, and 11 known flavonoids were isolated from the leaves of Cleistocalyx conspersipunctatus. The structures of these flavonoids were determined using spectroscopic investigation and electronic circular dichroism computation. Compound 1 showed stronger inhibition of alpha-glucosidase compared to the established inhibitor corosolic acid, suggesting its potential as a valid alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. Molecular docking was used to explore the interaction mechanism between compound 1 and alpha-glucosidase, and the biosynthetic pathway of these flavonoids in C. conspersipunctatus was proposed.

Study on the mechanism of non-covalent interaction between rose anthocyanin extracts and whey protein isolate under different pH conditions

Yun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the non-covalent interaction mechanism between rose anthocyanin extract (RAEs) and whey protein isolate (WPI) and compared it with the interaction mechanism between pure anthocyanin (PC) and WPI. The results showed that RAEs and WPI had non-covalent interactions under different pH conditions, with hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces playing a role. Interestingly, PC and WPI also exhibited non-covalent interactions, with hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces as the driving forces. Additionally, changes in WPI's secondary structure were observed in both RAEs and PC.

Inhibition mechanism of diacylated anthocyanins from purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) against α-amylase and α-glucosidase

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Diacylated AF-PSP exhibited significant inhibitory activity against alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, binding to enzymes mainly through hydrogen bonds and inducing conformational changes in the enzymes. Molecular docking further confirmed the interaction of Diacylated AF-PSP with enzyme active site, potentially stabilized by its acyl groups. In vivo experiments in SD rats also showed that Diacylated AF-PSP could effectively lower blood glucose levels, indicating its potential application in managing hyperglycemia.

Production of α-rhamnosidases from Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 and their role in deglycosylation of dietary flavonoids naringin and rutin

Alvaro Ferreira-Lazarte et al.

Summary: This study investigated the amino acid sequence, structural analysis, biochemical properties, and glycosidase activity of two recombinant alpha-rhamnosidases, Ram1 and Ram2, from Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1. Ram2 demonstrated a substrate specificity towards alpha-(1→6) glycosidic flavonoids and potential cost-effective production of isoquercetin. PPO was found to efficiently convert naringin and rutin into their corresponding aglycones, suggesting its potential use for improving the sensory properties of beverages.
