Integrative analyses of gene expression and chemosensitivity of patient-derived ovarian cancer spheroids link G6PD-driven redox metabolism to cisplatin chemoresistance

Kaoru Yamawaki et al.

Summary: By analyzing patient-derived ovarian cancer spheroids, it was found that cisplatin resistance is correlated with elevated levels of G6PD and active glutathione. Additionally, the combination of a G6PD inhibitor with cisplatin in vitro effectively inhibited spheroid proliferation.

Biocompatibility of magnetic nanoparticles coating with polycations using A549 cells

Elvira Rozhina et al.

Summary: Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation of iron chloride and sodium hydroxide. Stabilized by different polycations, the biocompatibility and toxicity of these nanoparticles in human lung carcinoma cells were studied, with PAH-stabilized magnetic nanoparticles showing the best biocompatibility and the PEI-magnetic nanoparticle complex being the most toxic.

Evaluation of Nanoparticle Penetration in the Tumor Spheroid Using Two-Photon Microscopy

Feby Wijaya Pratiwi et al.

Summary: The study found that the penetration and accumulation of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) in solid tumors are influenced by their physicochemical properties, and individual parameters cannot define their ability. The stability of MSNs determines their success in reaching deeper regions in the tumor, while changes in penetration behavior post-protein crowning are associated with both the original properties of NPs and proteins on their surfaces.

Biomaterials for Three-Dimensional Cell Culture: From Applications in Oncology to Nanotechnology

Tarek Sayde et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional cell culture has transformed cellular biology research by allowing for analysis of cellular behavior and responses to microenvironment stimuli. The use of hydrogel scaffold-based models can produce multicellular tumor spheroids when growing cancer cells, providing a platform to study tumor development and toxicity assessment. However, the biggest challenge lies in the reproducibility of the system's components, particularly the multicellular tumor spheroids.

The application of nanoparticles in cancer immunotherapy: Targeting tumor microenvironment

Muyue Yang et al.

Summary: The development and metastasis of tumors are closely linked to the tumor microenvironment (TME). Nanoparticles, with their unique physical properties and design, show potential in efficiently penetrating TME and delivering therapeutic agents to specific components. However, the heterogeneity of tumors and individuals may limit the effectiveness of nanoparticle delivery systems in all types of tumors, calling for further understanding of TME changes at different stages of tumor development for the design of more personalized nanoplatforms.
