Low-Index Stoichiometric Surfaces of CuBiW2O8

Edan Bainglass et al.

Summary: The novel quaternary metal oxide, CuBiW2O8 (CBTO), is identified as a promising solar light absorber. This paper studies the surface properties of CBTO to examine its applicability for solar energy applications. The research explores the emergence of electronic properties from the interplay of cations in bulk CBTO and proposes a systematic approach to identifying stable surfaces and predicting the equilibrium crystal shape based on surface energies.

Review of Liquid Argon Detector Technologies in the Neutrino Sector

Krishanu Majumdar et al.

Summary: Liquid Argon (LAr) is widely used in particle detection due to its low cost, high availability, and excellent scintillation properties. Many neutrino experiments are based on using LAr in Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) for high resolution three-dimensional particle reconstruction. Current experiments include both single phase and dual phase LAr experiments, with new research focusing on LArTPC readout technologies for potential wide-scale use in the future.

Wavelength-shifting performance of polyethylene naphthalate films in a liquid argon environment

Y. Abraham et al.

Summary: Liquid argon is commonly used in neutrino physics and dark matter experiments due to its scintillation light production, which is converted to visible wavelengths using wavelength-shifting materials. This study compared poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) to tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) as wavelength shifters in argon-based experiments, finding that PEN produced less visible light than TPB, with varying levels of light production among different PEN-including samples determined by differences in optical properties and molecular orientation. Unlike TPB-coated samples, PEN-coated samples did not exhibit long-term increases in light collection when immersed in bulk liquid argon.

Impact of point defects on the electrical properties of selenium: A density functional theory investigation with discussion of the entropic term

Adrien Stoliaroff et al.

Summary: In this study, two crystalline allotropic forms of selenium in ambient conditions were investigated using density functional theory, revealing information such as energy-volume relationships, pressure-energy relationships, phonon properties, and pressure-temperature phase diagrams. It was found that the low p-type conductivity of the trigonal phase is mainly attributed to selenium self-interstitials, while the very low conductivity of the metastable phase is related to deep native defects. Additionally, it was discovered that antimony may have a positive impact on the conductivity of selenium.
