Trapping precursor-level functionalities in hierarchically porous carbons prepared by a pre-stabilization route for superior supercapacitors

Mulati Mansuer et al.

Summary: The versatile module design of precursor networks allows for flexible functionalization of nano-carbon electrode materials to meet adaptable energy storage demands. However, the transfer of functionality and network from precursor to carbon is still a work in progress. To enhance network strength and preserve precursor-level functionalities, a pre-stabilization route has been proposed. This approach successfully fixes more electroactive nitrogen into the resulting carbon microspheres compared to non-pretreated carbon, leading to increased ion-accessible platforms and superior energy storage performance.

Synthetic Porous Melanin

Zofia E. Siwicka et al.

Summary: Melanin, commonly known for its role in skin pigment and UV radiation protection, has been found to have the ability to adsorb toxins in some melanized organisms. A synthetic porous melanin (SPM) was successfully developed with the highest measured surface area among polydopamine-based materials, showing effectiveness in absorbing various gases and organophosphate toxins with high selectivity and potential for ammonia capture. The discovery of porous analogues in biological systems is anticipated due to the demonstrated advantages of synthetic porous melanin and melanin's natural adsorbent role.

Highly Selective Adsorption and Desorption of Charged Molecules in Three-Dimensional Networks of Polydopamine-Modified Carbon Nanotube Sponges

Shenglin Zhou et al.

Summary: Selective adsorption and desorption of charged molecules in water was achieved using polydopamine-modified carbon nanotube sponges. By incorporating pH-responsive polydopamine, positively charged molecules were selectively adsorbed over a pH range and negatively charged molecules were selectively adsorbed at low pH values, allowing for successful separation of charged aqueous molecules. Tuning the pH value of the desorption solution enabled the selective desorption of charged molecules from the polydopamine-modified CNT sponges.

Metal-Doped Polydopamine Nanoparticles for Highly Robust and Efficient DNA Adsorption and Sensing

Mohamad Zandieh et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of adding polyvalent metal ions during the synthesis of PDA NPs (called metal-doped) with adding them after the synthesis (metal-adsorbed). Zn2+ showed excellent ability for promoting DNA adsorption and metal-doped NPs were more efficient than metal-adsorbed NPs. The Zn2+-doped PDA NPs were applied for sensitive DNA detection with a low detection limit and resistance to nonspecific protein and phosphate displacement.
