The varying roles of ecosystem services in poverty alleviation among rural households in urbanizing watersheds

Dan Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the importance of ecosystem services at the landscape level and household characteristics in connecting ecosystem services and poverty alleviation in a rapidly urbanizing landscape. The results indicate that household-level differences have significant impacts on poverty alleviation. In terms of ecosystem services, regional food supply is significantly associated with poverty alleviation, and household-level benefits from cultural services have a significant positive effect on households moving to the better-off group.

Summary: This study explored the valuation of urban green space characteristics in the Brussels Capital Region, finding that socio-demographic characteristics correspond with distinct patterns of use and valuation. The study also identified an inadequate supply of UGS characteristics and recommended planning considerations to address this issue.

The cost-benefit evaluation based on ecosystem services under different ecological restoration scenarios

Mingqi Li et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in ecosystem services value under four restoration scenarios, with Scenario 4 having the highest value and Scenario 1 the lowest. The spatial distribution of value was uneven, with high-value regions concentrated in the southwest and central areas. There were large variations between different scenarios, but smaller differences between Scenarios 2, 3, and 4. The largest loss from farmland abandonment was in regulating services, followed by supporting, provisioning, and cultural services.

Patterns and Distributions of Urban Expansion in Global Watersheds

Qingxu Huang et al.

Summary: This study used a long-term multitemporal data set to analyze the spatiotemporal trends of urban expansion in endorheic and exoreic watersheds from 1992 to 2016, revealing that 70% of watersheds showed a decelerating trend in urban expansion. The speed of urban expansion in endorheic watersheds lagged behind exoreic watersheds, with the former approximately 1/4 of the latter. The pattern of urban expansion in endorheic watersheds was found to follow the low-density and sprawling trend observed in exoreic watersheds.
