Updated HIV-1 Consensus Sequences Change but Stay Within Similar Distance From Worldwide Samples

Gregorio V. Linchangco et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed 90 new HIV-1 subtype and CRF consensus sequences and compared them with worldwide HIV-1 genome sequences. The 2021 consensus sequences were found to be shorter than the 2002 sequences, but closer to the global genome sequences. The results suggest that the 2021 consensus sequences are likely good representations of the typical subtype/CRF genome nucleotide states.

Conformational plasticity of the HIV-1 gp41 immunodominant region is recognized by multiple non-neutralizing antibodies

Jonathan D. Cook et al.

Summary: The early humoral immune response to acute HIV-1 infection is non-neutralizing and targeted towards the PID region on the surface of HIV-1 virions. The PID, a conserved 15-residue region, undergoes structural changes and can be recognized by various non-neutralizing antibodies, contributing to HIV-1 immunodominance.

Reverted HIV-1 Mutants in CD4+ T-Cells Reveal Critical Residues in the Polar Region of Viral Envelope Glycoprotein

Wuxun Lu et al.

Summary: The polar region of HIV-1 Env plays a crucial role in viral infectivity. Mutations in the polar region can greatly decrease or eliminate viral infectivity, but compensatory Env mutations can restore infectivity. This study demonstrates that HIV-1 mutants with fusion-defective Env can regain replication competency in CD4(+) T-cells.
