Tribological Characteristics and Load-Sharing of Point-Contact Interface in Three-Body Mixed Lubrication

Jeng-Haur Horng et al.

Summary: This study developed an analysis framework to investigate the contact characteristics in 3-body mixed lubrication. The study found that in mixed lubrication, the values of real contact area, film thickness, contact mode, and solid contact load in 3-body contact were larger than those in ideal 2-body contact. These values increased with an increasing particle size or density.

Transition of the friction behaviour and contact stiffness due to repeated high-pressure contact and slip

S. Fukagai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the running-in process between the wheel and rail using ultrasound reflectometry and high-pressure torsion test approach. Four interfaces with different initial topographies were continuously monitored until they became conformal. A mechanistic model for the running-in process was proposed based on the experimental results. These findings are important for understanding and managing the running-in process of the wheel-rail interface.

Influence of iron oxide coating on the tribological behavior of sand grain contacts

Jing Ren et al.

Summary: Research shows that artificially coating sand grains with iron oxides significantly alters the roughness and hardness of the grains, affecting inter-particle friction and normal contact stiffness. The friction coefficient of the coated specimens clearly depends on the magnitude of normal load and loading history, likely due to factors such as contact breakage, plowing damage, and surface debris buildup.

Correlation Between Friction Coefficient and Friction Vibration in Running-In Process Based on Cross Recurrence Plots

Yuankai Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between friction coefficient and vibration signals in a friction system using running-in friction tests and cross recurrence plots (CRPs). The results show a strong correlation between friction coefficient and vibration signals, with the strongest correlation occurring under boundary lubrication.

Experimental study on cutting force in ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning of 304 austenitic stainless steel

Yingshuai Xu et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the generation mechanism of cutting force in ultrasonic vibration assisted turning (UAT) and establishes a cutting force model based on the mechanism of UAT. A force measuring test system is designed and contrast experiments for stainless steel workpieces are conducted to analyze the influence of ultrasonic vibration and technological parameters on cutting force. It is found that ultrasonic vibration significantly reduces cutting force, and cutting parameters play a crucial role in controlling the machining process.

Evaluation of friction reduction and frictionless stress in ultrasonic vibration forming process

Jun Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contact interface friction, its reduction, and the frictionless stress in ultrasonic vibration assisted forming process using experimental, analytical, and numerical methods. It is found that applying oscillation and reducing the diameter-to-height ratio can significantly lessen the flow stress by reducing friction. The relation among experimental/apparent stress, strain, and friction coefficient can be used to predict the friction coefficient and real/frictionless stress.

Scale and surface morphology effects on the micromechanical contact behavior of granular materials

Chitta Sai Sandeep et al.

Summary: The study found that the normal and tangential stiffness of glass specimens increased with increasing grain diameter, but decreased with increasing equivalent surface roughness. Interface friction increased with increasing equivalent surface roughness, but was not heavily dependent on grain size. Rough interfaces had extended slip displacements, resulting in slower degradation of stiffness.

Investigation of friction and vibration performance of lithium complex grease containing nano-particles on rolling bearing

Can Wu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative study of the tribological and vibration performance of synthesized lithium complex grease containing Carbon black, Fe3O4 and Al2O3 nanoparticles on rolling bearing. The results show that the presence of nanoparticles improves friction and wear behavior, with Al2O3 nanoparticles demonstrating the best tribological performance due to their high hardness, cylindrical shape, and deposition on the worn surface. Additionally, the wettability test indicates that Al2O3 nanoparticles can effectively promote base oil flow on the grease soap fibers, resulting in the most effective bearing vibration suppression.

Effect of ultrasonic and low frequency vibrations on friction coefficient at die radius in deep drawing process

Lijun Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the reduction of friction between the sheet metal and die during deep drawing through ultrasonic vibration (UV) and low frequency vibration (LFV). New theoretical models were proposed, and the mechanism of reducing the macroscopic friction coefficient was explored. Testing showed that UV conditions resulted in higher reduction ratios of the macroscopic friction coefficient, but also caused more wear and adhesion compared to LFV conditions.

Morten Opprud Jakobsen et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the vibrations emitted by a set of grease lubricated ball bearings run under load, when lubrication conditions alternate between good and insufficient. The study shows a good correlation between the lubrication ratio κ and spectral kurtosis for a given frequency band, both when the bearing is new and when κ is below 0.6.

Study of wear particles formation at single asperity contact: An experimental and numerical approach

M. A. Mekicha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the friction and wear behavior of a single roll asperity sliding through a sheet metal using a micro-mechanical experimental approach and material point method (MPM) scratch simulations. It reveals that ploughing is the dominant wear mechanism under lubricated conditions, while wedge forming is the main wear mechanism in the absence of lubricant. The influence of chrome plating on reducing wear particles formation is attributed to its interaction with the lubricant, with almost all frictional resistance arising from deforming the substrate in lubricated contact.

Wear and vibration behavior of ZDDP-Containing oil considering scuffing failure

Shin-Yuh Chern et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the presence of ZDDP additives and the running-in process can effectively increase scuffing load, with relatively small differences in wear curves and lower wear losses compared to lubricants without ZDDP. Therefore, the factors affecting friction failure due to ZDDP need to be fully considered.
