Shall we use cryotherapy in the treatment in surgical procedures, in acute pain or injury, or in long term pain or dysfunction? - A systematic review

Ingrid Hultenheim Klintberg et al.

Summary: The use of cryotherapy in patients with musculoskeletal disorders shows moderate certainty of evidence for reducing pain, improving ROM, patient satisfaction, and few adverse events after surgical procedures. However, for acute pain, long-term pain, and dysfunction, the evidence is positive but with lower certainty. Further research is needed to evaluate timing, temperature, dose, and frequency of cryotherapy.

Summary: The study shows that WBC can improve cognitive functioning, especially in immediate recall and orientation. Additionally, it improves depressive symptoms but leads to a significant reduction in BDNF levels.

Whole-body cryostimulation application with age: A review

Summary: WBC treatment shows potential benefits for subjects over 55 years old, including increased blood factors, reduced levels of inflammatory markers, improved short-term memory, and enhanced BDNF release. This non-pharmacological treatment has exciting therapeutic potential in enhancing performance and alleviating chronic conditions in older subjects.

Impact of acute partial-body cryostimulation on cognitive performance, cerebral oxygenation, and cardiac autonomic activity

Dimitri Theurot et al.

Summary: This study found that a brief PBC exposure enhances cognitive inhibition performance on a Stroop task in males, mediated by increased parasympathetic cardiac control and cerebral oxygenation. However, the effects of PBC on cognitive function seem to differ in females, possibly due to different sensitivity to cold stimulation.

Relationship between Cardiopulmonary, Mitochondrial and Autonomic Nervous System Function Improvement after an Individualised Activity Programme upon Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients

Slawomir Kujawski et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of an Individualised Activity Program (IAP) on cardiovascular, mitochondrial, and fatigue parameters in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients. The results showed that IAP significantly reduced fatigue and improved functional performance, but caution is needed as exercise was not well tolerated by 51% of patients.

Changes in the Allostatic Response to Whole-Body Cryotherapy and Static-Stretching Exercises in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients vs. Healthy Individuals

Slawomir Kujawski et al.

Summary: This study compared the functional interrelation of fatigue and cognitive, cardiovascular, and autonomic nervous systems in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients with healthy individuals. It observed a disturbance in homeostasis in the patients and differences in network structure before and after intervention. The network analysis revealed higher stress levels in the CFS group and identified key relationships between fatigue, baroreceptor function, and aortic stiffness in the patients.

Summary: The study found that cold stimulus on the cheeks significantly increased blood flow in the cerebral PFC, resulting in improved performance on the Stroop cognitive test. Cold stimulus enhanced cognitive performance by activating the left dorsolateral region of the PFC.
