In vivo effects of 1,4-dioxane on genotoxic parameters and behavioral alterations in Drosophila melanogaster

Fatma Turna Demir

Summary: In this study, the toxic and genotoxic effects of DXN were evaluated using a fruit fly model organism. The results showed that even at non-toxic concentrations, DXN induced mutagenic and recombinogenic effects in the fruit flies, as well as genotoxicity in blood cells. Furthermore, the non-toxic concentrations of DXN also significantly increased oxidative stress, behavioral abnormalities, and phenotypic alterations.

Effect of fungal indoor air pollutant 1-octen-3-ol on levels of reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide as well as dehydrogenases activities in drosophila melanogaster males

Giulianna Echeverria Macedo et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure of D. melanogaster to the fungal volatile organic compound 1-octen-3-ol can lead to adverse effects on mitochondrial activity, which may be attributed to oxidant stress. The adverse consequences were mainly related to necrotic mechanisms rather than apoptotic mechanisms. Furthermore, males were found to be more sensitive to 1-octen-3-ol exposure, possibly explaining the adverse responses of males to mold.

Resveratrol and Prostate Cancer: The Power of Phytochemicals

Nadia Zaffaroni et al.

Summary: Prostate cancer is the fifth leading cause of tumor-related deaths in men globally, with its long latency period making it ideal for chemopreventive studies. Resveratrol, a natural compound, has shown promise as a chemopreventive agent and enhancer of antitumor activity in prostate cancer. Ongoing clinical trials are exploring the potential of resveratrol as an antimetastatic agent in prostate cancer treatment.

Adverse biological effects of ingested polystyrene microplastics using Drosophila melanogaster as a model in vivo organism

Esref Demir

Summary: The presence and use of polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) have raised serious environmental concerns, with unknown impacts on human health. In vivo studies using the Drosophila melanogaster model show that exposure to PSMPs can lead to morphological defects, impaired climbing behavior, and genotoxic effects through somatic DNA recombination in a concentration-dependent manner.

Current opinion on risk assessment of cosmetics

Kyu-Bong Kim et al.

Summary: Risk assessment of cosmetic ingredients includes hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. The EU has banned animal studies for toxicity testing of cosmetic ingredients since 2013, leading to the development of alternative methods. Alternative test methods and new technologies such as omics and artificial intelligence have been discussed to improve hazard identification and knowledge of cosmetic ingredients.

Summary: Short-term storage led to significant increases in comet tail intensity and olive tail moment in both HPBL and FLECH-104 samples. Freezing FLECH-104 samples at -80 degrees C and -196 degrees C resulted in increased tail intensity, while frozen HPBL samples did not show significant increases and even exhibited a slight decrease. Increased frequency of highly damaged cells was observed in both short-term storage and after freezing, suggesting a significant destructive effect.

Summary: The study revealed that exposure to HAPNPs caused reproductive toxicity in male rats, resulting in significant decreases in sperm count, motility, hormone levels, and oxidative stress markers, as well as increased DNA damage and inflammation. However, nano-antioxidants such as chitosan and curcumin nanoparticles showed protective effects by improving semen quality and reducing oxidative damage in the reproductive system.
