Anticoagulation in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Lisa Baumann Kreuziger et al.

Summary: COVID-19 patients are at higher risk of developing thrombosis, both microvascular and macrovascular. Therapeutic heparin may be beneficial for noncritically ill hospitalized patients, while prophylactic-dose heparin is recommended for critically ill patients. Collaborative research and funding have improved the care of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Value-based assessment of implementing a Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT)

Rahul Annabathula et al.

Summary: PERTs, a new multidisciplinary approach to PE care, efficiently identify and risk stratify PE patients, leading to improved quality and reduced overall cost of care. Implementation of PERT resulted in a significant decrease in in-hospital mortality, hospital LOS, and total care costs between pre- and post-PERT eras. Further research is needed to validate these findings in larger cohorts.

Effect of a Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Team on Patient Mortality

Colin Wright et al.

Summary: This observational study demonstrated that the implementation of Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERT) was associated with a sustained reduction in 6-month mortality for high-risk pulmonary embolism patients. PERT implementation also resulted in a shorter length of stay for patients. The time from triage to PE diagnosis was found to be independently predictive of mortality.

The Pulmonary Embolism Response Team: Why and How?

Richard N. Channick

Summary: Pulmonary embolism response teams (PERTs) aim to organize a single multidisciplinary team of experts to rapidly respond to patients with acute PE, offering consultation and implementing therapeutic options. Data suggest PERTs are valuable in reducing hospital length of stay and potentially improving patient outcomes.

Interhospital Transfer of Patients With Acute Pulmonary Embolism Challenges and Opportunities

Parth Rali et al.

Summary: The management paradigm for acute pulmonary embolism has evolved with the availability of advanced treatment modalities, coinciding with the development of pulmonary embolism response teams. Interhospital transfer of critically ill PE patients is a current unmet need, requiring medical optimization, defined roles of emergency services, and responsibilities of referring and receiving centers.

Impact and role of pulmonary embolism response teams in venous thromboembolism associated with COVID-19

Mateo Porres-Aguilar et al.

Summary: Venous thromboembolism associated with COVID-19, especially acute pulmonary embolism, poses challenges in clinical management. Establishing a multidisciplinary pulmonary embolism response team (PERT) can play a crucial role in providing fast, appropriate, team-based care for these patients.
