Process-structure-property of additively manufactured continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic: an investigation of mode I interlaminar fracture toughness

Guo Dong Goh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the process-structure-property relationship of continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics manufactured through fused filament fabrication, focusing specifically on mode I Interlaminar Fracture toughness (ILFT). It is found that higher nozzle and bed temperatures, along with lower print speed, enhance the mode I ILFT. The mode I ILFT is greatly affected by porosity and bond formation between the layers, which are dependent on the process parameters.

Experimental and numerical study on open-hole tension/compression properties of carbon-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic laminates

Keiichi Shirasu et al.

Summary: The stress-strain responses and damage initiation/propagation mechanisms of an open-hole carbon-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic were investigated through experimental and numerical methods. The superior mechanical properties of the material were found to be mainly attributable to the high toughness and ductility of the thermoplastic resin. The interfacial fracture toughnesses were evaluated through finite element analysis, and the stress-strain response and damage evolution of open-hole specimens were analyzed using a quasi-3D extended finite element method.

Predication of the in-plane mechanical properties of continuous carbon fibre reinforced 3D printed polymer composites using classical laminated-plate theory

Khalid Saeed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the in-plane mechanical properties of continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic polyamide composite manufactured using a 3D printing system and found that the modulus of elasticity and tensile strength were significantly improved. The influence of fiber orientation on mechanical properties was investigated, and the experimentally determined values can be used to predict the performance of 3D printed components.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of post-processing temperature on 3D printed CCFRC, finding that treatment at 150 degrees Celsius significantly reduced porosity and increased interlaminar strength without altering dimensions, which contributed to the overall enhancement of mechanical properties.

Longitudinal compression failure of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced composites: An experimental and computational study

Haibin Tang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigates the longitudinal compression failure mechanisms of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer components using the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technique. Experimental and computational analyses show that the introduction of waved filaments can lead to degradation of the failure strength, although further degradation is limited when more waved filaments are used. Fracture morphology analysis reveals the occurrence of in-plane and out-of-plane kink-bands, with failure predominantly at the cross-section with the contact region of the waved and regular filaments.
