Prestrain in the rabbit eardrum measured by digital image correlation and micro-incisions

Pieter Livens et al.

Summary: Prestrain in the tympanic membrane (TM) of cadaveric rabbit ears was measured using stereo digital image correlation, with incisions made to release the prestrain. Average prestrain values around the incisions ranged from 3.52% to 13.62%, showing no clear differences between radial and circular incisions.

Structural stiffening in the human middle ear due to static pressure: Finite-element analysis of combined static and dynamic middle-ear behavior

Pieter G. G. Muyshondt et al.

Summary: A 3D finite-element model was developed to simulate the effect of static pressure gradients on the vibration response of the middle ear. The study found that the static pressure-induced prestress in the middle ear had a substantial impact on vibration response, and material nonlinearity led to different stiffening effects at different components of the middle ear.
