Effects of h-BN particles on the structure, oxidation behaviour, and kinetics of C/C composites fabricated via CVI

Zi-bo Niu et al.

Summary: The study examined how the h-BN content affects the deposition mechanism, morphology, pore system, and oxidation behavior of C/C composites, leading to different oxidation kinetics. It was found that the oxidation of C/C composites is controlled by a mixed diffusion/reaction mode across the entire temperature range, while at higher temperatures (800-900 degrees C), the oxidation of C/C-BN composites is controlled mainly by diffusion due to the self-healing effect of B2O3.

Ablation-resistant Ta0.78Hf0.22C solid solution ceramic modified C/C composites for oxidizing environments over 2200 °C

Yulei Zhang et al.

Summary: Ta0.78Hf0.22C solid solution ceramic was introduced into carbon/carbon (C/C) composites through polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP). The addition of Ta0.78Hf0.22C led to a significant increase in flexural strength and modulus of the composites, as well as improved ablation resistance under high temperature oxyacetylene ablation environment. The enhanced performance was attributed to the formation of oxide particles with low melting point and the solid solution oxide particles that could effectively seal cracks and improve oxygen-barrier capacity.

Ablation behavior of HfC coating with different thickness for carbon/carbon composites at ultra-high temperature

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: The research showed that moderate thickness of HfC coating can effectively release the thermal stress generated during ablation and improve ablation resistance. The 40 μm-thick HfC coating exhibited the best ablation resistance, alleviating thermal stress.

Improvement of ablation resistance of CVD-HfC/SiC coating on hemisphere shaped C/C composites by introducing diffusion interface

Mingde Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, the bonding strength and ablation resistance of HfC based coating on hemisphere shaped C/C composites were optimized by introducing a HfC-SiC diffusion interface. The results showed a significant increase in bonding strength and a reduction in linear and mass ablation rates after introducing HfC-SiC diffusion. The enhancement of ablation resistance was attributed to the adhesion effect of Hf-Si-O glass phase and the increase of bonding strength in the outer layer.

Ablation resistance of HfC-TaC/HfC-SiC alternate coating for SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites under cyclic ablation

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: Alternate coatings of HfC-TaC/HfC-SiC with different sublayer thicknesses were fabricated on SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites, showing the best ablation performance due to the dense oxide layer and stress release from dendritic cracks. Additionally, exfoliation at the interface of adjacent sublayers in some coatings led to violent evaporation of exposed sublayers.

Summary: The SiC/HfC coating with multi-layer alternating structure prepared on C/C composites by LPCVD showed improved ablation resistance under ultra-high temperature environments, attributed to the formation of Hf-Si-O sticky glass phase and the multi-layer structure.

Influence of carbon preform density on the microstructure and ablation resistance of CLVD-C/C-ZrC-SiC composites

Qinchuan He et al.

Summary: The study focused on the effects of preform density on the microstructure and ablation behavior of CLVD-C/C-ZrC-SiC composites. Results showed that composites prepared from preforms with a density of 0.91 g/cm(3) exhibited dense microstructure and proper ceramic content, leading to excellent ablation resistance attributed to the formation of a uniform and continuous protective layer of ZrO2-SiO2.
