A Comprehensive Understanding of the Aging Effects of Extreme Fast Charging on High Ni NMC Cathode

Tanvir R. Tanim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation mechanisms of NMC811 under extreme fast charging conditions and compares its performance with NMC532. The results show that NMC811 experiences more severe subsurface crystallographic degradation compared to NMC532, but still maintains superior performance due to its radially oriented grains and improved transport properties.

Effect of Anode Porosity and Temperature on the Performance and Lithium Plating During Fast-Charging of Lithium-Ion Cells

David C. Robertson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of electrode porosity on lithium plating by testing single-layer pouch cells. Higher temperatures are found to reduce lithium plating and improve fast-charge capacity, but also alter degradation mechanisms. Kinetic rate laws can be used to fit capacity loss and resistance increase data, with A and B constants changing with temperature and porosity.

Laser structuring of graphite anodes and NMC cathodes-Proportionate influence on electrode characteristics and cell performance

Lucas Hille et al.

Summary: Microscopic diffusion channels were introduced into graphite anodes and NMC622 cathodes through short-pulsed laser radiation to enhance performance. Laser-structured anodes showed significant increase in capacity retention at high rates, with reduced ionic resistances through equivalent circuit modeling. Insights into the impact of anode or cathode structuring are valuable for future lithium-ion battery design and manufacturing.

A Model for Investigating Sources of Li-Ion Battery Electrode Heterogeneity: Part II. Active Material Size, Shape, Orientation, and Stiffness

M. Nikpour et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of active material particle size, shape, orientation, and stiffness on the performance of graphitic anodes using the MPSP model. It found that smaller active particles result in higher density films with better conductivity and elastic modulus. Additionally, disk-shaped particles tend to be horizontally oriented during calendering, reducing through-plane ionic transport, and increasing stiffness leads to higher porosity in the film.

Quantifying Uncertainty in Tortuosity Estimates for Porous Electrodes

Karthik S. Mayilvahanan et al.

Summary: This study presents an approach to determine tortuosity in porous electrodes by fitting a P2D model to discharge profiles, identifying a dimensionless current as a key parameter for confident estimates of tortuosity. The method is applied to analyze LVO and NMC electrodes, discussing assumptions and uncertainties in the measurements. Additionally, an uncertainty analysis is conducted on the standard method of quantifying tortuosity using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under blocking electrolyte conditions, showing confident estimates can be obtained despite uncertainties in equivalent circuit model parameters.

Quantification of heterogeneous, irreversible lithium plating in extreme fast charging of lithium-ion batteries

Summary: This study investigates the local lithium plating characteristics of lithium-ion batteries after XFC cycling using spatially resolved X-ray diffraction, revealing a spatial correlation between irreversible lithium plating, inactive lithiated graphite phases, and local state-of-charge of the cathode. The research shows that irreversibly plated lithium leads to a loss of lithium inventory and active anode material, driving capacity fade in the batteries.

Summary: By utilizing focused ion-beam scanning electron microscopy tomography, this study presents a three-phase reconstruction model of a lithium-ion battery cathode containing the carbon binder domain (CBD), representing the pore space morphology effectively. Results reveal the CBD as a convoluted network that dominates the pore space structure and limits Li+ transport through tortuous and constricted diffusion pathways.
