Association of Tropical Cyclones With County-Level Mortality in the US

Robbie M. Parks et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between county-level tropical cyclone exposure and death rates from various causes in the US. The findings show that each additional cyclone day per month is associated with slightly higher death rates in the months following the cyclone for several causes of death, including injuries, infectious and parasitic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neuropsychiatric conditions, and respiratory diseases.

Tropical Cyclone Exposures and Risks of Emergency Medicare Hospital Admission for Cardiorespiratory Diseases in 175 Urban United States Counties, 1999-2010

Meilin Yan et al.

Summary: Through analyzing data from 180 counties in the United States between 1999 and 2010, it was found that tropical cyclone exposure was associated with a decrease in cardiovascular hospitalizations on the storm day, followed by an increase after the storm, and an elevation in respiratory hospitalizations throughout the storm period. The study concluded that there was a short-term increase in cardiorespiratory hospitalization risk among the elderly during tropical cyclone exposures.
