Ga2O22+ Stabilized by Paired Framework Al Atoms in MFI: A Highly Reactive Site in Nonoxidative Propane Dehydrogenation

Yong Yuan et al.

Summary: Determining the structure of Ga-containing catalytic sites in Ga/H-ZSM-5 catalyst for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been a challenge due to the complexity of the system. In this study, two types of Ga species were differentiated using quantitative pulse titration reactions. The highly active divalent Ga species, identified as Ga2O22+, showed at least 18 times higher PDH activity than isolated Ga+ species. Additionally, only 30% of the observed Al pair sites were able to stabilize Ga2O22+, providing a method to probe the distribution of Al in zeolites.

Ga speciation in Ga/H-ZSM-5 by in-situ transmission FTIR spectroscopy

Yong Yuan et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the speciation of gallium in Ga/H-ZSM-5 using FTIR spectroscopy, revealing the existence of two different types of Ga species: isolated Ga+ and Ga+-H+ pair sites. These different species have distinct properties and may exhibit different catalytic activities in alkane dehydrogenation reactions.

Mechanism and Kinetics of Light Alkane Dehydrogenation and Cracking over Isolated Ga Species in Ga/H-MFI

Neelay M. Phadke et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanisms and kinetics of C2H6 and n-C4H10 dehydrogenation and cracking over isolated Ga species in Ga/H-MFI, comparing the results to those reported previously for C3H8 dehydrogenation and cracking. The findings suggest that C2H6 dehydrogenation is catalyzed by both [GaH](2+) and [GaH2](+) cations, while C4H10 dehydrogenation and cracking are exclusively catalyzed by [GaH](2+) cations. The reaction kinetics demonstrate a common mechanism occurring over [GaH](2+), similar to that reported for C3H8 dehydrogenation/cracking over Ga/H-MFI.

Propane Dehydrogenation and Cracking over Zn/H-MFI Prepared by Solid-State Ion Exchange of ZnCl2

Danna Nozik et al.

Summary: The study prepared Zn/H-MFI with varying Zn/Al ratios via solid-state ion exchange (SSIE) and characterized it by various methods. It was found that Zn/H-MFI with higher Zn loadings contains Z(2)O(4)/ZnAl2O4,Cl-2 nanoclusters, which can be transformed into [ZnH](+) cations through postsynthetic treatment.

Understanding the Correlation between Ga Speciation and Propane Dehydrogenation Activity on Ga/H-ZSM-5 Catalysts

Yong Yuan et al.

Summary: Research showed that Ga+-H+ pair sites are more active in nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) than isolated Ga+ sites, and GaHx decomposition is unlikely to be part of the PDH mechanism. Experimental measurements and models were used to determine the activation energy characteristics of the PDH reaction on Ga/H-ZSM-5 catalysts, highlighting the possibility of an alkyl mechanism.
