Real-time Observation of Structural Dynamics Triggering Excimer Formation in a Perylene Bisimide Folda-dimer by Ultrafast Time-Domain Raman Spectroscopy

Yongseok Hong et al.

Summary: This study presents the landscape of structural dynamics in pi-conjugated organic materials, specifically focusing on the formation and relaxation of an excimer state in a perylene bisimide folda-dimer. Vibrational snapshots captured using ultrafast time-domain Raman spectroscopy illustrate the ultrafast structural evolution triggering the excimer formation and its subsequent relaxation. The findings not only showcase the necessary structural dynamics for excimer formation and control of its characteristics, but also provide important criteria for designing pi-conjugated organic molecules.

Coupling between Harmonic Vibrations Influences Quantum Beating Signatures in Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectra

Jonathan D. Schultz et al.

Summary: Launching and tracking wavepacket dynamics with two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) provides insight into the complex interactions that underlie coherent processes within photoactive materials. This study compares single- and multicomponent vibronic Hamiltonians in simulations against experimental 2DES results, and finds that coupling between purely harmonic vibrational wavepackets can have significant effects on the experimental 2DES results.

A Holstein-Peierls Approach to Excimer Spectra: The Evolution from Vibronically Structured to Unstructured Emission

April L. Bialas et al.

Summary: Excimers are commonly found in many organic systems, with broad, structureless, and red-shifted emission. A theoretical model based on a Holstein-Peierls Hamiltonian is proposed to explain absorption and photoluminescence in molecular dimers, showing that excimer emission can be induced through local or nonlocal intermolecular coupling. Incorporating both types of coupling successfully reproduces absorption and excimer emission spectra.

Accelerating symmetry-breaking charge separation in a perylenediimide trimer through a vibronically coherent dimer intermediate

Chenjian Lin et al.

Summary: Understanding the photophysics and photochemistry of molecular pi-stacked chromophores is crucial for their utilization as functional photonic materials. This study compares the excited-state dynamics of a covalent slip-stacked perylenediimide dimer and trimer, revealing fundamental insights into electronic state mixing and symmetry-breaking charge separation beyond the dimer limit.

Influence of Vibronic Coupling on Ultrafast Singlet Fission in a Linear Terrylenediimide Dimer

Jonathan D. Schultz et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is a photophysical process that can enhance the efficiency of solar cells, with recent experimental evidence suggesting a role for nuclear motions and vibronic coupling in supporting rapid and efficient singlet fission in organic chromophore assemblies. Observations of low-frequency coherent wavepacket transfer indicate a significant dependence of singlet fission on nonadiabatic coupling. These findings demonstrate how nonadiabatic mixing influences the complex potential energy landscape of ultrafast singlet fission.

Interplay of vibrational wavepackets during an ultrafast electron transfer reaction

Shahnawaz Rafiq et al.

Summary: Research has shown that controlling molecular vibrations can accelerate certain electron transfer reactions and determine the process in which vibrations participate in the reaction. Experiments have observed ballistic electron transfer along a reaction coordinate with high-frequency promoting vibrations, as well as the system becoming impulsively out of equilibrium due to the electron transfer reaction.

Effective normal modes identify vibrational motions which maximally promote vibronic mixing in excitonically coupled aggregates

Sanjoy Patra et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the role of vibronic resonance in energy transfer and proposes a method to better understand vibronically enhanced energy transfer through effective normal modes. The study finds that bringing uncoupled sites into vibronic resonance can convert traps into shuttles for energy transfer.

Excited-State Dynamics of Perylene-Based Chromophore Assemblies on Nanoporous Anodic Aluminum Oxide Membranes

Su Chen et al.

Summary: The study explores the excited-state decay pathways in organic chromophore assemblies by covalently attaching them to AAO membranes, showing that the interchromophore spacing can affect the charge transfer properties of excimer states. The charge separation process increases with solvent polarity in a symmetric breaking charge separation, while it decreases with an increase in average distance between chromophores.

Charge-Delocalized State and Coherent Vibrational Dynamics in Rigid PBI H-Aggregates

Seongsoo Kang et al.

Summary: This study explores the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics and vibrational coherences of two perylenebisimide (PBI) H-aggregates, revealing the formation of excimer and delocalized radical anion states in the excited state. The intermolecular interactions between PBI units induce the formation of these new excited states, and specific Raman modes can be crucial indicators for coherent exciton dynamics in the aggregates. Additionally, analysis using time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman scattering provides insights into the vibrational coherences associated with the formation of these states in each aggregate system.
