Tailoring the Electronic Structure of an Atomically Dispersed Zinc Electrocatalyst: Coordination Environment Regulation for High Selectivity Oxygen Reduction

Yaling Jia et al.

Summary: Accurately regulating the selectivity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by tailoring the coordination environment of atomically dispersed Zn sites can achieve high selectivity, with ZnO3C catalyst processing a 2 e(-) ORR pathway for H2O2 generation in 0.1 M KOH. This is attributed to the decreased electron density around Zn in ZnO3C which changes the intermediate adsorption and contributes to the high selectivity towards 2 e(-) ORR.

Enhancing oxygen reduction electrocatalysis by tuning interfacial hydrogen bonds

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: The proton activity at the electrified interface plays a crucial role in the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. By using a library of protic ionic liquids on platinum and gold interfaces, researchers have successfully enhanced the oxygen reduction reaction activity by up to fivefold, showing a volcano-shaped dependence on the pK(a) of the ionic liquid. This enhancement is attributed to strengthened hydrogen bonds between ORR products and ionic liquids with similar pK(a)s, leading to favorable PCET kinetics.
