Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer: The Engine of Energy Conversion and Storage

Daniel G. Nocera

Summary: Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is essential for energy conversion in chemistry and biology. It plays a crucial role in various energy systems such as the Artificial Leaf, Bionic Leaf-C, Bionic Leaf-N, and Coordination Chemistry Flow Battery.

Weakly hydrated anions bind to polymers but not monomers in aqueous solutions

Bradley A. Rogers et al.

Summary: Research has shown that weakly hydrated anions can solubilize macromolecules but cause small molecules made from identical chemical constituents to precipitate out. This phenomenon can be explained by the regulation of anion binding to polymers by molecular curvature and interfacial water structure. The interactions of NaSCN with polyethylene oxide oligomers and polymers of varying molecular weight reveal a link between ion-specific effects and theories addressing how hydrophobic hydration is modulated by the size and shape of a hydrophobic entity.

Water-assisted Concerted Proton-Electron Transfer at Co(II)-Aquo Sites in Polyoxotungstates With Photogenerated RuIII(bpy)33+ Oxidant

Francesco Rigodanza et al.

Summary: The cobalt substituted polyoxotungstate Co6 displays fast electron transfer kinetics to photogenerated Ru-III(bpy)(3)(3+), significantly faster than cobalt oxide nanoparticles. Mechanistic evidence suggests that the oxidation and transformation processes of Co6 under different pH conditions involve specific Co(II) aquo and hydroxo groups, and proceed through bimolecular kinetics or concerted proton electron transfer (CPET) mechanisms.

Perspectives in Dye Chemistry: A Rational Approach toward Functional Materials by Understanding the Aggregate State

David Bialas et al.

Summary: The past 20 years have seen a renaissance in dye chemistry, transitioning from traditional colorant research to functional materials. Functional material properties are governed by intermolecular interactions, rather than molecular structure alone. Future research should focus on developing larger oligomers and being guided by theoretical predictions.
