On the role of symmetry in XDW-CASPT2

Stefano Battaglia et al.

Summary: In this study, two new exponents are proposed to address a major issue in the XDW-CASPT2 method, by implicitly considering the symmetry of states using first-order effective Hamiltonian coupling elements and quantifying relative weights through a more physically sound approach. The improved XDW-CASPT2 method is rigorously tested on several photochemical systems, demonstrating success in maintaining the accuracy of MS-CASPT2 while providing smooth potential energy surfaces similar to XMS-CASPT2.
