A versatile approach for the synthesis of degradable polymers via controlled ring-opening metathesis copolymerization

John D. Feist et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to synthesize degradable polymers by copolymerizing 2,3-dihydrofuran with NBEs, resulting in polymers with tunable solubility, glass transition temperature, and mechanical properties that can be fully degraded under mildly acidic conditions.

Highly Versatile Strategy for the Production of Telechelic Polyolefins

Aaron A. Burkey et al.

Summary: A general synthetic strategy is reported for producing various phenyl-group-terminated polyethenes and poly(alpha-olefins), which can be transformed into different telechelic polyolefins through postpolymerization reactions. These materials serve as building blocks for polyolefin-based synthetic polymers, as demonstrated by the syntheses of well-defined polyolefin-polyester di- and triblock copolymers.

Mechanical Recycling of Packaging Plastics: A Review

Zoe O. G. Schyns et al.

Summary: The current global plastics economy is linear, but transitioning to a circular economy is crucial for reducing environmental impacts through degradation, reuse, and recycling. Mechanical recycling plays a key role in a sustainable plastic economy, but challenges such as high costs, mechanical property degradation, and inconsistent product quality need to be addressed.

Toward the Copolymerization of Propylene with Polar Comonomers

Stephen L. J. Luckham et al.

Summary: Polyolefins, including polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), are widely used in consumer products and can be enhanced by forming composites with other materials. To improve their compatibility with other materials, the inclusion of polar functionalities in the polymer chain is essential. Different transition metal catalysts have varying effects on achieving this goal, with late transition metal catalysts being more suitable for reactions with polar comonomers.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Redefining Sustainable Polymers

Danielle E. Fagnani et al.

Summary: There has been an increased focus on sustainable polymers in recent years, but less attention has been paid to the end-of-life fate of polymers. It is suggested to place more emphasis on chemical recycling to promote a closed-loop plastic economy, in order to keep us on the path to sustainability.

Synthesis of Long-Subchain Hyperbranched Polypropylene Using Thermally Degraded Products as Precursor

Hanging Jiang et al.

Summary: A new strategy has been established to access long-subchain hyper-branched polypropylene (LHB-PP) with well controlled molecular weight and topologic microstructure. Compared to linear polypropylene, the newly obtained LHB-PP solution has lower intrinsic viscosity and smaller hydrodynamic radius, while the melt exhibits higher zero shear viscosity and more apparent shear-thinning phenomenon, indicating improved properties.

Chemically recyclable thermoplastics from reversible-deactivation polymerization of cyclic acetals

Brooks A. Abel et al.

Summary: The study introduces a reversible-deactivation CROP method using a commercial initiator and catalyst to synthesize poly(1,3-dioxolane) with comparable tensile strength to some commodity polyolefins. Depolymerization of PDXL using strong acid catalysts efficiently returns monomer, even from a waste mixture of commodity plastics. This efficient polymerization method offers a tough thermoplastic material that can undergo selective depolymerization to monomer.
