Efficient hybrid polling for ultra-low latency storage devices

Gyusun Lee et al.

Summary: The study proposes an efficient hybrid polling scheme that minimizes CPU cycles for polling without sacrificing I/O latency, optimizing CPU utilization by considering idle and busy storage device states. The scheme achieves reductions in CPU utilization of 5%-40% compared to the original hybrid polling, while providing faster I/O latency by up to 10%.

SSD internal cache management policies: A survey

Shivani Tripathy et al.

Summary: SSDs are increasingly used as primary nonvolatile storage, with internal caches playing a crucial role in boosting performance, lifetime, and robustness. The three types of internal caches - data cache, mapping cache, and flash-based cache - are specifically designed to meet different requirements such as controlling traffic to the back-end and optimizing response time. The study presents a methodological survey of cache management policies for these caches, providing a taxonomical classification, comparative analysis, guidelines for future cache designers, and future research directions. This work stands out by analyzing policies for all three types of SSD internal caches, a comprehensive approach not taken in prior surveys.

ADAPT: An auxiliary storage data path toolkit

Weisu Wang et al.

Summary: The legacy storage data path has limitations such as redundancy, poor coordination, latency assumption, and lack of support for new data models. The ADAPT toolkit complements the existing path by enabling coordination and data tracking across storage layers. Case studies demonstrate the potential for application support and secure data deletion through ADAPT-based systems.

iTRIM: I/O-Aware TRIM for Improving User Experience on Mobile Devices

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: TRIM is a recommended command for delivering data invalidation information to flash storage, reducing data copies during device-level garbage collection and improving endurance and performance of mobile devices. This study identifies both advantages and drawbacks of the default TRIM scheme in mobile devices, proposing a new iTRIM scheme to address performance issues and minimize I/O contentions.
