The evolutionary heritage and ecological uniqueness of Scots pine in the Caucasus ecoregion is at risk of climate changes

M. Dering et al.

Summary: The research found that the high genetic variability of Scots pine populations in the Caucasus reflects a unique evolutionary trajectory compared to the main range in Europe. Currently, Scots pine grows under a broad spectrum of climatic conditions in the Caucasus, but its genetic resources are under threat from climate change. Predictions suggest that over 90% of the current distribution of Scots pine may be lost in this century, greatly impacting the biodiversity of the Caucasus hot-spot.

Adaptive responses to temperature and precipitation variation at the early-life stages of Pinus sylvestris

Jose Alberto Ramirez-Valiente et al.

Summary: Contrasting temperature regimes play an important role in driving the divergent evolution of Pinus sylvestris populations at early-life stages, with populations showing higher seedling survival and growth at temperatures similar to their home environment. Northern populations experienced lower survival and growth at warmer sites.

Summary: Scots pine and mountain pine complex hybridize in contact zones producing cryptic hybrids, which may exist in other populations. The study identified these hybrids in a specific area based on chloroplast and mitochondrial markers, morphological differentiation, and phenotype assessments.
