Catalytic advancements in carbonaceous materials for bio-energy generation in microbial fuel cells: a review

Simran Kaur Dhilllon et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the progress in carbon-based materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts and their utilization in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Incorporating transition metals and heteroatoms into carbon can enhance the ORR activity and power generation in MFCs. Nitrogen-doped carbons have abundant active sites and superior conductivity, stability, and catalytic activity. Carbon-based catalysts and biomass-derived carbons show potential to replace expensive Pt catalysts for ORR.

Using an anion exchange membrane for effective hydroxide ion transport enables high power densities in microbial fuel cells

Ruggero Rossi et al.

Summary: High current densities achieved by bioanodes in electrochemical cells have not translated into higher power densities in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) until now. This study demonstrates that the critical factor for boosting power generation in MFCs is the transfer of OH- ions from the cathode to the bioanode. The results show that using an anion exchange membrane (AEM) in MFCs significantly increases power density compared to using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) or non-ion selective ultrafiltration membrane (UFM).

Sandwich construction of chitosan/reduced graphene oxide composite as additive-free electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors

Mingming Gao et al.

Summary: The sandwich construction of chitosan/reduced graphene oxide composite was synthesized without carbonization or activation process, improving dispersion and specific surface area. Dehydration condensation between CS and rGO formed NH-C=O groups that promoted wettability and conductivity, resulting in a high specific capacitance and good rate performance when used as an additive-free electrode. Solid-state supercapacitor device with CRG electrode and lignin hydrogel electrolytes achieved high gravimetric energy densities at different power densities.

Synthesis of Co/Ni @ Al2O3-GO as novel oxygen reduction electrocatalyst for sustainable bioelectricity production in single-chambered microbial fuel cells

Amit Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: The study focused on the synthesis and performance evaluation of Co-Ni nanoparticles supported on Al2O3-GO matrix for oxygen reduction reaction in single-chambered microbial fuel cells. The hybrid catalyst Co-Ni (2:1)/Al2O3-GO showed higher stability and electrocatalytic activities compared to Pt/C catalyst, resulting in improved ORR rate and power density in MFCs. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity was attributed to the high electronic conductivity and long stability of the nanocomposite, making it a promising alternative to traditional Pt/C catalysts for MFC applications.
