Interfacial engineering of Ni(OH)2 on W2C for remarkable alkaline hydrogen production

Hong Chuan Fu et al.

Summary: A novel W2C-Ni(OH)(2) electrocatalyst has been developed, showing superior hydrogen evolution reaction efficiency in alkaline environment compared to commercial Pt/C catalyst. Experimental and theoretical results suggest that Ni(OH)(2) facilitates water dissociation, while W2C serves as the site for hydrogen adsorption and desorption.

Corrosion-resistant non-noble metal electrodes for PEM-type water electrolyzer

Aimi Asilah Haji Tajuddin et al.

Summary: Developing cheap and highly durable non-noble metal catalysts for water electrolysis is crucial in sustainable hydrogen production. The graphene-encapsulated NiMo alloys showed acid stability and promising practical applications as non-noble metal electrodes. By tuning the number of N-doped graphene layers, a balance between catalytic activity and corrosion in acidic environments was achieved.

Constructing a Multifunctional Interface between Membrane and Porous Transport Layer for Water Electrolyzers

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of different loadings of iridium on the investment costs of PEM water electrolyzers using titanium PTLs, finding that an Ir loading of 0.025 mg.cm(-2) as a protective layer is sufficient to achieve similar cell performance as higher Ir loadings. The Ir protective layer not only significantly reduces the Ohmic resistance, the largest part of the performance gain, but also shows promising oxygen evolution reaction activity, making it cost-effective as a catalyst layer.

Critical Review of Platinum Group Metal-Free Materials for Water Electrolysis: Transition from the Laboratory to the Market Earth-abundant borides and phosphides as catalysts for sustainable hydrogen production

Alexey Serov et al.

Summary: In order to address the global issue of carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen is considered the desired energy vector for transitioning to environmentally friendly fuel cell power. Water electrolysis is the primary technology for sustainable hydrogen production, but the scarcity and high cost of platinum group metals pose a barrier. Research is focusing on developing pgm-free materials, such as phosphides and borides, to replace critical catalysts and make water electrolysis commercially viable. Structure-property correlations of emerging HER and OER catalysts are extensively reviewed, highlighting the importance of crystallographic and electronic structures, morphology, and surface chemistry on catalytic activity.

Activity and stability of Ir-based gas diffusion electrode for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer

Jeong Hyun Oh et al.

Summary: A facile strategy to fabricate Ir-based gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) is proposed in this study. By modulating the Ir oxidation state, the electrodes exhibit excellent activity and stability for the oxygen evolution reaction in the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). The Ir-based GDEs show superior mass activity and acceptable stability during long-term operations, highlighting their potential for efficient hydrogen production.
