How band tail recombination influences the open-circuit voltage of solar cells

Max Hilaire Wolter et al.

Summary: Band tails have a significant impact on the power conversion efficiency of solar cells, particularly in relation to the open-circuit voltage loss. By incorporating alkali atoms, band tails can be deliberately adjusted to improve efficiency in thin-film solar cells. The presence of band tails increases radiative recombination and nonradiative recombination losses in solar cells.

Anion Substitution Effects on the Structural, Electronic, and Optical Properties of Inorganic CsPb(I1-xBrx)3 and CsPb(Br1-xClx)3 Perovskites: Theoretical and Experimental Approaches

Hamid M. Ghaithan et al.

Summary: In this study, high-quality inorganic perovskite thin films of CsPb(I1-xBrx)(3) and CsPb(Br1-xClx)(3) were prepared using a thermal evaporation system. Both experiments and first-principles calculations were conducted to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the films. The band gap of thin-film perovskite was tuned by replacing I- with Br- and then Cl-, and the excitonic effects on optical absorption were considered to properly extract the electronic band gap and exciton binding energy.

Electrically Switchable Amplified Spontaneous Emission from Lead Halide Perovskite Film

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: The research team prepared perovskite films on indium tin oxide substrates using a spin-coating method and studied their amplified spontaneous emission behavior. They designed and fabricated perovskite film-based electrically switchable ASE devices based on a LED device configuration, showing good controllable optoelectronic switching behavior. The photoelectric response of the device can be modulated by different current densities.

Revisiting the Determination of the Valence Band Maximum and Defect Formation in Halide Perovskites for Solar Cells: Insights from Highly Sensitive Near-UV Photoemission Spectroscopy

Dorothee Menzel et al.

Summary: This study employs advanced near-UV photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the density of occupied states in the valence band and band gap of a triple-cation lead halide perovskite. A valence band model is established to accurately determine valence band maxima at different k-vectors, providing insights into defect states formation during perovskite decomposition. The research highlights the effectiveness of near-UV CFSYS with modeling in characterizing the valence band and quantifying defect states in lead halide perovskites.

Unique Curve for the Radiative Photovoltage Deficit Caused by the Urbach Tail

Juan Bisquert

Summary: The photovoltage of high-performance solar cells like GaAs and metal halide perovskites is affected by the exponential Urbach tail in the absorption spectrum, with a parameter E-U. Increasing Urbach energy leads to a decrease in the maximum achievable photovoltage. A calculation based on the detailed balance and reciprocity of absorption and emission shows that the voltage loss due to the exponential tail in absorption follows a universal relation.

A universal Urbach rule for disordered organic semiconductors

Christina Kaiser et al.

Summary: The absorption onset sharpness in crystalline semiconductors is characterized by temperature-dependent Urbach energies, quantifying both static and dynamic disorder. The applicability of the exponential-tail model to disordered systems has long been debated. However, sub-gap absorption in organic semiconductors is found to be universally dominated by thermal broadening at low photon energies, with the Urbach energy equalling the thermal energy regardless of static disorder. Our findings provide insight into the meaning of the Urbach energy in molecular solids and present a strategy to determine excitonic disorder energy.
