Preparation and tribological properties of Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS composite films

Cuihong Han et al.

Summary: By depositing the Mo/MoS2-Pb-PbS composite film using PVD coating + low-temperature ion sulfide composite process, a strong and lubricating layer was successfully achieved on 9Cr18 bearing steel, solving the issue of weak film-substrate cohesion in molybdenum disulfide solid lubricant coating in harsh space environment. The composite film exhibited good friction-reduction and anti-wear properties in vacuum, with wear (partly) occurring between transfer film and lubricating film due to the formation of a transfer film on mating surface.

Black phosphorus quantum dots: A new-type of water-based high-efficiency lubricant additive

Weiwei Tang et al.

Summary: Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) used as water-based lubricant additives showed remarkable friction reduction and anti-wear properties even at ultra-low concentrations. The additives also demonstrated a relatively long lifetime at high loads and outperformed BP due to their small particle size, good dispersion stability, and high reactivity at frictional surfaces. The formation of a robust tribochemical film on the rubbing surface lubricated with BPQDs further indicated their excellent tribological performance.

Vibronic Excitons and Conical Intersections in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Ryan W. Tilluck et al.

Summary: Surface defects and organic surface-capping ligands have been found to impact the photoluminescence properties of semiconductor quantum dots by altering the rates of competing nonradiative relaxation processes. Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy reveals that absorption of light by quantum dots generates vibronic excitons, and during hot-carrier cooling, coherent wavepacket motions of the ligands are rapidly damped with vibronic coherence transferred to the photoluminescent state. These findings suggest a many-electron, molecular theory for the electronic structure of quantum dots.

Tribochemical mechanism of superlubricity in graphene quantum dots modified DLC films under high contact pressure

Xuan Yin et al.

Summary: By designing three series of tribo-couples based on amorphous carbon films modified by graphene quantum dots and conducting tests under harsh conditions, it was found that the lubrication mechanism of GQDs can achieve a superlubricity state; additionally, the formation of a nanostructured sliding interface is crucial in this process.

A New Pathway for Superlubricity in a Multilayered MoS2-Ag Film under Cryogenic Environment

Xuan Yin et al.

Summary: A fundamental cryogenic study in tribology identified a superlubricity state exhibited by a disulfide film, leading to the design of a multilayered MoS2-Ag film with extremely low friction coefficient in a cryogenic environment. The film's superlow friction coefficient of below 0.001 under high load at 170 K was attributed to the formation of MoS2-wrapped Ag nanoparticles at the sliding interface. This new type of solid lubricant film offers a novel solution for mechanical engineering applications in harsh working conditions.

Unprecedentedly Large Photocurrents in Colloidal PbS Quantum-Dot Solar Cells Enabled by Atomic Layer Deposition of Zinc Oxide Electron Buffer Layer

Hyemin Jo et al.

Summary: By using atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ZnO buffer at a low temperature, the interfacial band alignment can be enhanced, resulting in an increased photocurrent density above 35 mA/cm(2) at the band gap of PbS quantum dots of 1.18 eV. The electron barrier with ALD-ZnO is 0.55 eV lower compared to sol-gel ZnO, and the photoactivation of shallow gap states in ALD-ZnO induces band bending for efficient electron tunneling from PbS to ZnO, leading to improved device lifetime under constant illumination at 1-sun.
