Negative permittivity behavior in microwave frequency from cellulose-derived carbon nanofibers

Zihao Guo et al.

Summary: Carbon nanofibers with negative permittivity behavior in the microwave frequency band were successfully produced by freeze-drying and high-temperature carbonization using cellulose nanofibers as raw materials. The AC conductivity of CNFs was found to increase with carbonization temperature, resulting in the observation of negative permittivity at temperatures above 1100 degrees C. The frequency dispersions of permittivity followed the Lorentz model and/or the Drude model as temperature increased.

Metacomposite based on three-dimensional ferromagnetic microwire architecture for electromagnetic response

Qian Jiang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a metacomposite composed of a three-dimensional (3D) ferromagnetic microwire architecture to achieve excellent microwave absorption performance. Simulation is used to evaluate the arrangement of discontinuous and continuous ferromagnetic microwires in adjusting microwave absorption and impedance matching. A 3D weaving method is adopted to fabricate the metacomposite, preserving the continuous form of ferromagnetic microwire while achieving high absorption performance of discontinuous microwire. The spacing effect of the microwires in the 3D metacomposite on the electromagnetic response is analyzed. It is found that the high microwave absorption is attributed to improved impedance matching, and the power loss is a combination of dielectric loss and magnetic loss. The 3D ferromagnetic microwire architecture enhances the reflection and absorption of electromagnetic waves among ferromagnetic microwires, ultimately achieving high microwave absorption. The proposed metacomposite with 3D ferromagnetic microwire architecture is believed to be a prominent passive stealth material in engineering applications.

Kai Sun et al.

Summary: Flexible composites with weakly negative permittivity were prepared by using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the flexible matrix and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as functional fillers. The composites exhibited low frequency dispersion behavior with a negative permittivity conforming to Drude model when the content of MWCNTs exceeded 13wt%. This study provides guidance for the development and application of flexible metamaterials.

Nickel/yttrium iron garnet metacomposites with adjustable negative permittivity behavior toward electromagnetic shielding application

Chuanbing Cheng et al.

Summary: The recent advancement of metacomposites with negative permittivity provides a new research approach for the design and construction of electromagnetic shielding materials. In this study, Ni/YIG metacomposites were fabricated using a liquid impregnation approach and their electromagnetic properties were explored at MHz and Ku bands. With an increase in Ni content, isolated Ni particles formed interconnected networks in the composites, resulting in changes in conducting mechanism and reactance characteristic. The composites with high Ni contents exhibited a negative permittivity behavior, attributed to low-frequency plasma state of free electrons in the completed Ni networks. The dispersion of negative permittivity at frequencies below 10 MHz was influenced by isolated metal particles and could be well described by the Drude-Lorentz model. A notable shielding effectiveness of 33.1 dB was achieved at Ku band, primarily due to the impedance mismatch caused by the negative permittivity. The inductive conducting networks were crucial building blocks for achieving negative permittivity and improving electromagnetic shielding performance. This work provides guidance for designing electromagnetic shielding metacomposites and promotes further development in this field.

Summary: In this study, CoFe2O4/graphite-polypyrrole (PPy) metacomposites with negative dielectric constant were successfully prepared using the surface-initiated-polymerization method. The negative dielectric constant was regulated by changing the content of CoFe2O4/graphite. The crystal structure, chemical structure, and microstructure of the samples were characterized, and the magnetic properties were reported. This work provides guidance for the fabrication of polymer-based metacomposites with tunable negative dielectric constant.

Summary: This work focuses on the fabrication and characterization of flexible polystyrene/graphene (PS/GR) composites with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties at radio frequency. The addition of graphene nanosheets in PS matrix led to the formation of a continuous conductive network, resulting in the observation of ENZ behavior at around 920 kHz. This research demonstrates the potential of flexible PS/GR composites in applications such as invisibility cloaks, drug delivery, and soft robotics.

Epsilon-near-zero response derived from collective oscillation in the metacomposites with ultralow plasma frequency

Zongxiang Wang et al.

Summary: In the study of electromagnetic metamaterial, the lack of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) response at radio frequency has restricted the application of novel antennas and printed circuit board. To explore this issue, ternary copper/silica coated copper/polyvinylidene fluoride (Cu/Cu@SiO2/PVDF) composites were prepared. The results showed a transition from positive to negative permittivity when increasing the content of Cu granules in the binary Cu/PVDF composites.

Low-frequency plasmonic state and negative permittivity in copper/titanium dioxide percolating composites

Zaixin Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ac conductivity, real permittivity, and reactance of copper/titanium dioxide percolating composites, revealing that the enhancement of interfacial polarization contributes to the enhanced permittivity before percolation, while plasma-like negative permittivity is achieved in excessively percolating state. Reactance analyses indicate that the negative permittivity is attributed to inductive characteristics, with greater inductance contributing more to the negative permittivity.

Weakly negative permittivity of MWCNT/TiN/CCTO ternary ceramics sintered in argon and nitrogen atmosphere

Kai Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, ternary multiwalled carbon nanotubes/titanium nitride/copper calcium titanate composites were prepared using a facile sintering method in an inert atmosphere to achieve weakly negative permittivity. The negative permittivity was observed due to the synergy between TiN and MWCNT, exhibiting Lorentz-like behavior at low frequencies and Drude-like behavior at high frequencies. Investigation revealed a close relationship between permittivity and reactance, with the sintering atmosphere also impacting the negative permittivity behavior.
