Operando acoustic analysis: a valuable method for investigating reaction mechanisms in mechanochemistry

Cesar Leroy et al.

Summary: This article presents a new operando approach for monitoring mechanochemical reactions by analyzing the evolution of sound during milling. The study shows that differences in sound can directly correlate with (physico)chemical changes in the reactor, making this technique highly attractive and complementary to others. Importantly, it can provide unique information on the movements of beads within the milling jars, opening new avenues for understanding mechanochemical processes.

Role of Hyperoxaluria/Hypercalciuria in Controlling the Hydrate Phase Selection of Pathological Calcium Oxalate Mineralization

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: Both clinical observations and in vitro studies have shown that high levels of oxalate or calcium in urine play a key role in determining the formation of different phases of calcium oxalate stones. This study used advanced imaging techniques to demonstrate the formation of two different amorphous calcium oxalate phases in solutions with varying Ca/Ox ratios, which subsequently crystallized into different hydrate phases. The findings provide direct evidence that the Ca/Ox ratio controls phase selection and crystallization pathways during the formation of pathological calcium oxalate stones.

Looking into the dynamics of molecular crystals of ibuprofen and terephthalic acid using 17O and 2H nuclear magnetic resonance analyses

Chia-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure and dynamics of crystalline ibuprofen and terephthalic acid using O-17 and H-2 NMR analyses, with improved labelling protocols and various experimental methods. The dynamics around carboxylic groups of ibuprofen were studied, revealing motions related to concerted double proton jump and H-bonded unit flip. Preliminary experiments with a H-2-O-17 diplexer connected to the probe were also conducted, showing potential for recording NMR spectra at different temperatures without probe configuration changes.

Triple Oxygen Isotope Measurements by Multi-Collector Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Nordine Bouden et al.

Summary: Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a powerful technique for in situ triple oxygen isotope measurements that has been developed over 30 years. With advancements such as the MC-SIMS system, it is now possible to routinely measure oxygen isotopic ratios in various matrices with high precision and spatial resolution. This paper focuses on the application of the MC-SIMS technique to the in situ monitoring of mass-independent triple oxygen isotope variations.

Labeling and Probing the Silica Surface Using Mechanochemistry and 17O NMR Spectroscopy**

Chia-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time how ball milling can be used to selectively and efficiently enrich the surface of fumed silica, allowing modulation of the enrichment level and material properties for detailed oxygen-17 NMR analysis. High-resolution oxygen-17 NMR analyses and DNP analyses provided clear identification of surface signals and selective labeling confirmation. Information on the distribution of surface environments and Si-O-Ti bonds were obtained, demonstrating the potential for studying interactions and bonding mechanisms in materials research.
