Understanding pore evolution in a lacustrine calcareous shale reservoir in the oil window by pyrolyzing artificial samples in a semi-closed system

Taoli Wang et al.

Summary: Calcareous shale is a promising target for shale oil exploration due to its favorable properties for the movement of shale oil and shale fracturing. However, lack of understanding of pore evolution in lacustrine calcareous shale poses exploration risks. Experimental results indicate that the maturity range of 1.2-1.29 %Re is highly favorable for shale oil exploration in lacustrine calcareous shale.

Juan Teng et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of pores undergo systematic evolution during the thermal maturation of shale, and the evolution of pore type and size is critically controlled by multiple diagenetic processes, including mechanical compaction, cementation, mineral dissolution, clay mineral transformation, and organic matter thermal maturation.

Shale pore connectivity and influencing factors based on spontaneous imbibition combined with a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment

Xuejun Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that microscale pore connectivity is the most prominent, followed by mesoscale and macroscale pores (or bedding fractures or microfractures); moreover, water-wet pore connectivity is superior to oil-wet pore connectivity. Oil imbibition slope is negatively correlated with production index (PI), positively correlated with Tmax (reflecting organic matter maturity) and calcite content, and not significantly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) content or other mineral contents.

Characterization, controlling factors and evolution of fracture effectiveness in shale oil reservoirs

Lei Gong et al.

Summary: Fracture effectiveness plays a crucial role in shale oil exploration. This study evaluated the fracture effectiveness in the Cretaceous Qing-1 Member shale oil reservoir in Gulong Sag, China, and identified structural fractures as the most significant factor. Structural inversion, abnormal high pressure, and dissolution were found to have the least impact on fracture effectiveness.

Jiyuan You et al.

Summary: The Chang 7 oil shales in the Triassic Yanchang Formation show significant positive anomalies in Cs, U, Th, Pb, and Mn, and negative anomalies in Eu and Ta. The TOC values vary across different sections, and there is a strong correlation between hydrothermal input intensity and TOC content.

Formation, preservation and connectivity control of organic pores in shale

Tenger Borjigin et al.

Summary: Organic pore development is controlled by the type, maturity, and decomposition of organic matter, while the preservation of organic pores is influenced by maturity and diagenesis. The connectivity of pores depends on the abundance and distribution of organic matter. Different types of shale have varying characteristics in the formation and connection of organic pores, grain margin fractures, and bedding fractures.

Han Wenzhong et al.

Summary: Based on comprehensive analysis of various data, the study determined the quality of shale reservoirs in Paleogene Kong 2 Member in Cangdong sag of Huanghua depression. Among them, PS2 was identified as the best shale section for oil production, followed by PS3, PS1, and PS4. High oil production was achieved in vertical and horizontal wells drilled in the PS2 and PS3 sweet spots, demonstrating the bright exploration prospects of shale oil in the area.
