Organic matter mineralization in modern and ancient ferruginous sediments

Andre Friese et al.

Summary: Research shows that methanogenesis dominates organic matter mineralization in ferruginous sediment, even with abundant reactive iron phases present. The coexistence of ferric iron and methane indicates a lack of iron-dependent methane oxidation. This suggests that methane production in low-oxygen Archaean and Proterozoic oceans could have significantly influenced Earth's early climate.

Geochemical Characteristics of Sediment in Tropical Lake Sentani, Indonesia, Are Influenced by Spatial Differences in Catchment Geology and Water Column Stratification

Sulung Nomosatryo et al.

Summary: Physical and chemical processes in the catchment and the lake itself influence the composition of lacustrine sediments, with Lake Sentani in Indonesia offering a unique opportunity to study multiple lake systems under similar climate conditions. The separation of the lake into four interconnected sub-basins results in diverse geochemical conditions, with differences in sediment composition and water column structure among the sub-basins. The geological catchment and morphological differences between sub-basins play a significant role in shaping the sediment input and water column structure of each sub-basin.
