Perspective: USDA Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review Methodology: Grading the Strength of Evidence in Nutrition- and Public Health-Related Systematic Reviews

Maureen K. Spill et al.

Summary: This article describes the methods used by USDA's NESR team to grade the strength of evidence in food- and nutrition-related systematic reviews. The NESR grading process includes assessing evidence against five elements and assigning one of four grades. This rigorous and transparent process ensures that decisions related to nutrition and public health are based on the strongest available evidence.

Perspective: Design and Conduct of Human Nutrition Randomized Controlled Trials

Alice H. Lichtenstein et al.

Summary: RCTs are considered the gold standard in establishing causal relations in human nutrition, and decisions made during the design and conduct of these trials impact the utility and generalizability of the study results. The goal is to maximize generalizability while producing high-quality data within limited resources.

Standardised Outcome Reporting for the Nutrition Management of Complex Chronic Disease: A Rapid Review

Savita A. Sandhu et al.

Summary: This review found that there is extensive heterogeneity in the reporting of outcomes in randomized controlled trials investigating nutrition interventions for the management of complex chronic disease, with only a small number of outcomes being reported with relative consistency. There is also a limited scope of outcomes reported, with a notable lack of patient-reported outcomes. Additionally, poor agreement was observed between the outcomes reported in the RCTs and those recommended by the Core Outcome Sets (COS).
